I wonder where Finlay married Helen. I can see that there might be a connection between Argyllshire and the Ellesmere estate so it is not odd that he moved there. But where did he meet Helen? I have tried everything that think of.
It looks as though the records office at Matlock have school log books/admission registers for Crich. You might get an address from that perhaps.

Slightly confused with the references to Crich and Matlock as these places are in Derbyshire, what help are they to me finding the information I am after?
The Ellesmere estate is in Lancashire so surely it would be Lancashire records I need to find.
As to where he met Helen, that one has me mystified as well, the 1911 census records her birth place as Dumbarton so not sure how they met. Finlay was working as a farm servant in 1901 at a place called Dunrostan which is on the edge of Loch Sween, although he is on the Mainland it is not that close to Dumbarton.

I wondered if Finlay was working at Lea Mills before joining up? Perhaps not, the correspondence is not clear.

As far as I know he could not read or write so that would explain why there were sometimes no acknowledgement of the parcels, the ones that he did acknowledge were probably written by someone for him. I don't think he had any connections to Matlock.

Hi again
I emailed the Lea Mills site to ask if they know how Finley connected to the company.
The reply says that they think he may have worked on the Marsden-Smedley estate since he was receiving parcels but was not listed in the company's ledger for working men.
The Lea Mills site are interested in having more details about Finlay - the idea being to have a site about people rather than just a list of names. So if you would like to get in touch with them (they would love a photo if you have one) then send me a private message with your email and I will send you the contact details.
