Just to make sure, I'll get the birth certificate for Solomon! The line I follow is James b 1792, Solomon b 1838-1914, David b1856-1904, David b 1877-1952 and then my father James b 1916, who is now 96 years old! He is really interested family research and was pleased to know we had found that James's father was Thomas (thanks to all your help)! I asume that James's mothers name was'nt on the records that you found, so would I only be able to find it on a birth certificate?

Hi when you get the birth certif info for Solomon would you post it on here
then I can add to Bcc

You wont get any Birth certifs for anyone born pre 1837 sept qtr.
The Bapt record may or may not be your James with father Thomas.
When Bpts are very early ones they sometimes only have fathers name depends on church I suppose.

How would I be able to confirm if Thomas is James's father then? No birth certificate for him nor fathers name on early marriage records? Any Ideas? Sounds confusing!

There is no sure way to find the father of James, would need to go to St Helens Archives and look through any old documents they hold. Thomas may or may not be the father of James, not everyone was baptised and not every Parish or every Church is on Family Search, you can ask an Archivist at St Helens to search for you but they charge about £20.00 an hour. Did James have a son called Thomas?

On my records I have James and Hannah having 11 children. The first one I have listed is Mary b 1816 followed by Sarah b 1817. The first son, born 1820 was Thomas. Not sure if any children were born before Mary - unable to find any.
I'd estimated that James might've died after 1851 because had not been able to find him on the next census. I've checked deaths between 1851-61 and have found 2 deaths in 1851, 3 in 1852, 1 in 1854 and 1 in 1855 (all Dudley) so not sure which, or if any are James! Was hoping that they might've recorded how old they were when they died, which would have been a clue!!

Ok not found James bapt will have a look

found these and added on James snrs notes
St Giles Rowley Regis 5 Jan 1817 Sarah dau of James and Hanh Davis Knowle Collier

-St Giles Rowley Regis 18 Jan 1819 Joseph son of James and Hannah Davis Knowle Collier

-St Giles Rowley Regis 2 April 1820 Thos son of James and Hanh Davis Spring House Collier

-St Giles Rowley Regis 12 August 1827 Hannah dau of James and Hanh Davis Windmill End Collier ..(note not sure on this one at all)

And then Possible Burials ....

-St Giles Rowley Regis 17 Jan 1819 Sarah Davis Knowle 2 Small Pox

-St Giles Rowley Regis 28 Sept 1827 Hannah Davis Spring House 13 Weeks Bowel Complaint

now are you near Smethwick archives?

if so why dont you go along there and go thru the Burial register for St Giles from 1851 - 1861 see if any likely burials for James and Hannah
have a look for likely death dates from bmsgh info there were 2 in 1852 at RR
see if any James Davies dies betw those dates living Springfield should have age at death

Thats lovely thanks for getting that info! Live quite near but would have to get someone to take me over (dont drive)!! At least, like you say, the death records would confirm James and Hannahs age when they died. I'd wondered if there were any children born before Mary b 1816 especially that they married at the end of 1811 (although not confirmed). And also if James Snrs mother was either named Mary or Sarah seeing that those might've been the names of James and Hannahs first 2 children. Possible?

Dunno :?

Found James bapt have added in James snrs notes the only thing is father on that one is down as nailer.

Looks to me like Sarah Thomas and Hannah are probably James and Hannahs kids I may add those on Bcc.

If it twere me I would save myself a tenner or 2 and hit the smethwick archives and go thru the St Giles burials
see if there is a likely James and Hannah there if that fails then you could contact the registry office and see if
they have any likely burials.

That Thomas may or may not be the father it is difficult to know.

Maybe see on the IGI if there are any other bapts with father Thomas and any names that stick out
other than that sorry I am out of ideas. :(
