I agree about the cleaning the filters ,but i used to wash mine under the tap every week. I never clean the "dust receptacle more than once every six months , just throw the contents into the bin. I hate bags they are just another item I have to buy. Henry ! Everyone including me eldest daughter keeps telling me how good they are,but when I worked in children's nursery ,when the cleaner was sick or on hols ,we had to use a Henry to clean the mess the children made. Bloomin thing it was ,it would never pick anything up .

Your cleaner must have left a full bag in situ before going off.

We've a central vacuum, but if we didn't have that I'd go for a cylinder every time, rather than an upright. My husband used to have a Miele, which was great, make sure that the straight bit of the pipe is long enough that you can vacuum without bending. Cylinder's are good on stairs too, much better than an upright.
We bourght my parents a new head for their vax, which has a switch so it has brushes down for hard floors, and brushes up for carpets, oh and it doesn't have wheels on the head, so nothing for long hair to get caught in.
With all vacuum cleaners you need to change the filters, if they get clogged up their sucking power sucks!
Don't know in the UK, but here it's easy enough to get to try out the vacuum cleaners at home, so you can find the one that suits you best.

I love my little robot. He doesn't do a very good job, but he's cute. And my hand is only occasionally on the remote control button, Pete!
But I do have to rescue him when he's tried to climb the table leg again.
(Incidentally, it's the only remote control in the house that I can wrest from Brian's grip!)
Some mistakes are too much fun
to only make once.
