My Garratt line goes back to the Curate, and my Woodhouse line starts here

Not related no, but I was good friends with a girl named Alison Capewell from Hockley Lane when I was at school in the 70s. A bit of trivia - She was dating the lead singer of a local Heavy Metal band at the time - Jameson Raid were the band.

Sorry to change the subject slightly. My husbands cousin Pete Green is the base player in Jameson Raid.

There's a lot of Black Country families that can be traced back to the Woodhouses of Wombourne, They owned land around Rowley Church as well as in Wombourne and their family has been recorded in quite a few books over the centuries. My link comes via Mary Woodhouse who married William Garratt, son of the Rev Thomas Garratt of St Giles Church in Rowley Regis. Is that why it's called the WODEHOUSE in Wombourne ?........So when do the Helier family come into this ?....seems to be a Jersey connection there with that name.

The name Woodhouse is derived from the Wodehouse. The family name first appears as "de la Wodehouse" ie "of the Wodehouse" and gets changed to Woodhouse as the centuries progress. The house in Wombourne is built on and named after the estate that was owned by the Cocus family. I think the Helier family came later as owners of the house. From what I can gather, there were pig farmers and metal workers on the original estate.
St Helier in Jersey and St Helier in France are both named after Saint Helier, a Belgian Hermit who was martyred in Jersey in the 6th Century. The name became a popular christian name (eg Helier de Carteret). It would be very romantic to find another Channel Island link to Staffordshire though.
