Some employers wouldn't take on married women as servants so they may have lied about their status to get the job. Also there may have been a separation, even a divorce. Someone in that position may have been viewed as untrustworthy of employment so again they may have lied about their situation.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

Thank you. What sheltered lives we lead nowadays :P . They certainly didn't make it easy to track them down!
