Forgot to say Mary Ann Darby and William Hughes, 20 oct 1867 St Giles Rowley Regis Project no102505
England Easy
Source file 184 9594
Ref no 12 Family Search
1881 Census
William Hughes Brickmaker.
Boarder
RGII 3184 12 18 Some time William left home and never returned, no one seems to know what happened to him . the 81 census is the last time he can be found.
Apparently his daughter wrote on her wedding certificate ,Could be dead or alive.
Thomas and Abigail's son William Hughes b.1848 worked as a brickmaker, which was notoriously poorly paid work, seasonal, and also involved working away from home, tramping from one site to another. Charles Dickens portrayed brickmakers as the most desperate and debased of the poor in his novel Bleak House. In 1871, William was married to Mary Ann and they were together in Oldbury with two daughters aged 3 and 3 weeks. By 1881 they had six children, but at the time of the census, William was working away from home in Melton Mowbray.
There are signs that William's absences from home put a strain on the family. On the census taken on 6th April 1891, Mary Ann Hughes described herself as a widow, but when her daughter Mary Ann b.1871 (known as Pollie) got married to William Webb on 19th April, she said that she did not know whether her father was alive or dead. Intriguingly, in 1901 Mary Ann Hughes described herself as married rather than widowed, but I cannot find William Hughes on either the 1891 or 1901 censuses, or identify a death certificate for him. This piece has been taken from a relative of mine and is copyright free, its called Janes Roots,
