After extensive reading, I think I'm starting to grasp it.
But bleedin' typical! There isn't anyone down on the list for the parts Surrey or Suffolk for which I have addresses.

); isn't that the point, the pub
used to be there so the bridge was called after the pub, now the pub's not there it's called by the next available landmark. So those that are so old that they remember the pub would call it Whimsey Bridge whilst those that are young and spruce would know it as the Portway bridge.

I tend to think it may have been called both - but it's definitely the Whimsey Bridge on today's Google maps
