I am SO GLAD that my kids of grown out of that malarky!

I've made two dozen mince pies tonight (Rob, hard pastry is most likely too much water if you ask me) and just took the last-minute-Christmas cake out of the oven (it used up the rest of the mince meat which is perfect). And I made Jamie Oliver's get ahead gravy which is not as good as the made-on-the-day one that I usually do but may improve when the turkey juices go in it. Not sold on the star anise taste that it has.

All bar one present bought so tomorrow should not be too terrible. Going to eat rotten skate at 4pm with a bunch of friends so let the festivities begin.

think it would make the run up to christmas intresting having these guys calling

I don't know why but I thought linnell was a fella!

We're well on our way, cake made and almond iced, pressies are wrapped, shopping (apart from a local run for veg, milk & cream) done, most of the chocolate truffles are done, just the ginger ones to go. House cleaning today then the tree can come in. I've still got the pomander to make and MrsSRD has the kissing ball to complete. The log basket's full, as is the coal bucket. I haven't checked the tree lights!

We put our lights on yesterday (three trees) - and - don't know for how long this has been happening. Do you remember when if one light broke - the whole lot stopped working ? Well, we had three dud bulbs but all the others were fine. Now that's better !!!

The kids put the trimmings on and I was remembering when they were little - letting them dress the tree and then when they'd gone to bed, stripping it and starting again.

Hung about 70 balls from the ceiling in the dining room (purple and silver this year). Made two new damask table cloths and two purple and silver runners. Bought silver crackers but they have black bows, so making purple bows today to replace them.

Made the centrepiece for the table, silver and purple candles and silver painted twigs and leaves

Don't do cooking - leave that to the son in law who has everything in hand.

A married couple had been out shopping at the mall for most of the afternoon, suddenly, the wife realized that her husband had "disappeared".

The somewhat irate spouse called her mate"™s cell phone and demanded: Where the hell are you?

Husband: Darling you remember that Jewellery shop where you saw the Diamond Necklace and totally fell in love with it and I didn't have money that time and said Baby it'll be yours one day.

Wife, with a smile blushing: Yes, I remember that my Love.

Husband: Well, I'm in the Pub next to that shop.

1) Install new 60 inch telly into lounge room.....check.
2) Intall new PVR onto new telly.....check.
3) Buy a dozen bottles of Guinness.....check.
4) Filled car up with premium unleaded BEFORE the price mysteriously rises for the holiday weekend....check.
5) Made sure Mum In Law understands the trip to Wonthaggi is 150KM and we won't be stopping for bathroom breaks.....check. (I don't know why she doesn't fly down there. Perhaps her broomstick is in the garage.)
6) Shaved beard off because the Trouble N' Strife was complaining it tickles her thighs.....check.
7) Made the dogs stir crazy by putting wrapped squeaky toys under the tree and giving a single squeak everytime they leave the room.....check.
Made sure that the air conditioning is working down Wonthaggi as it will be 35 degrees at least.....check.
9) Rang my best mate and wished him merry X-Mas and hope he survives the cyclone about to hit Darwin.....check.


Ready to go! Just got to place bets on which family members won't be talking to each other after the weekend

In the old days the lights were set in series with no bridges across each individual fitting, nowadays they have some way of bridging an individual dead light, I understand though that when a bulb blows it puts an extra load on the others so they start going too, that's why it's best to replace dead ones.

I'm not sure they are; that would mean the bulbs are all 240v ones which would make them incredibly hot and wouldn't explain why when one goes the others glow brighter and then seem to blow soon after. The benefit of connecting in series is the ability to use lower voltage bulbs as the load of each bulb is added up to make the full voltage. (For the techies in the forum I'm using the terms voltage and load as a layman rather than being technically accurate with power/flow/resistance etc.).

My electrical engineer husband says ours, and probably all the ones available are in parallel - it's 240 v with a transformer that reduces the voltage.

No transformer on ours, just two bare wires that I push into the socket with matchsticks.
