The pen factory RF is referring to was Joseph Gillott on the Birmingham Road on the same side as Dudley County Ground. Gillotts was knocked down along with some old houses when the Tesco store, which was in Dudley town where Cousins furniture store is now, was re-built on the site where the new store is at Burnt Tree.
Dudley County Ground was demolished, making way for the Castlegate Park, not a park as we would think, but a leisure complex housing a Village Hotel, cinema, tenpin bowling places to eat and of course, housing!!
Must admit though, the road is so much better not having the actual island.
Have to agree Barb - much better now negotiating the roads. I think Tesco and Block Buster Video were built on the site or very near to Ewarts.

Re: Burnt Tree Island
Many thanks for all the replies, so the consensus is that the name transpired from a Fire, which makes sense, will have a look in some of my old books see if they contain anymore information, cheers from Linell.

Re: Burnt Tree Island
Proberly tied in with the first dudley castle fire as i would of thought the location it would have been part of the castle outer grounds of the estate ? poss entrance from birmingham ? or poss tied in with the civil war when best part of castle street was burnt down ?
