Just been studying the census-it is quite comprehensive. It indicates -can they read, can they write, can they speak English, number of years married, number of months out of work, are they nationalised, year of entry to USA, number of years in USA,race or colour, property owned or rented, number of children given birth to and number survived, place of birth of father

This is a picture (thanks to Norway Heritage website-well worth a look for shipping records ) of the Scythia that they emigrated to Boston on

I wish our (Australian) census were kept. Until now they destroyed our original forms. Didn't keep any individual information - only collated general stuff. Probably left-over paranoia from convict days.

Now at least you can tick a box saying you don't want your form destroyed.

I know I am like a dog with a bone over this but I still have William on his own in 1901 in England and 2 x Henrietta Tooth unaccounted for-possibly in Wrights Lane? or elsewhere in Blackheath , Old Hill area. With s such an aray of transcript variations uncovered, I am sure they are still there to be found.

Hi Carol,
Its possible that they were still in America, or on there way back when the 1901 census was done, (31st March).

Thank you Jimmy and Pete. I was not sure of the 1901 census date. That makes only a nine month gap and I guess the voyage itself took a week or so. As you say perhaps William came on ahead seeking work or accommadation.

The original Scythia 1 went out of service in 1899 so they must have returned on a different ship

http://www.norwayheritage.com/p_ship.asp?sh=scyth

I see on ancestry there are about 3 x Mrs Tooth arriving in Liverpool but I don't have subscription either at the moment and can't get to view the records. Any help much appreciated out there?

I doubt that I checked these during the ancestry free weekend when I found the other stuff because at the time the date was much more unknown. Now I have a narrow 9 month time span and I don't suppose there were too many crossings during tht time. June 1900 to March 1901 to recap.

Sorry NL- I have been rambling. The first thing to resolve -

Pete has it spot on
any h tooths on that passenger list or mrs tooths

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse. ... P9&pgoff=4

If the passenger list also shows children their names are Albert Selena, Edith Henrietta and Eliza
Any date after June 1900

Hi Peter, Well done -another fine discovery-sounds like he maybe came back first then and the others possibly after March 1901? I doubt very much they were much later in returning. The reason they came back to England was Henriettas health-she had asthma and preferred the English climate.
Family info indicates she returned around early 1900s- Dad thinks his mother can't have been much more than 5 which would make her return around 1900/01.
