My Nan who was born in Cradley 1894 and was one of the first girls to attend Halesowen Grammar School,
where she achieved what was the Oxford Pass, she went on to be a Teacher, she was also one of the first Married Teachers,
until about 1920 all lady teachers had to be Spinsters, my Nan was quite ground breaking in her own quiet way, 8)

Ex-Students of Halesowen Grammar School

Postby Maths girl » Sun Feb 20, 2011 7:14 am

This is a spin off of another thread where we realised that lots of relations were at Halesowen Grammar School and thought is would be good to start a list to see whether any of them would have been there at the same time -- none so far but any other contributions?

Christine Shakespeare -- born 1929 connected to Maths girl
Kenneth Shakespeare -- born 1922 connected to Maths girl

Edith Worton from Cradley Heath born 1894 - attended 1905 - Abt 1916 (not sure how long exactly) connected to Linell
Doris Newby from Cradley born 1894 attended 1905 - Abt 1916 connected to Linell
Margaret Haynes from Halesowen born 1927 - 2004 - attended 1936 - 1941 connected to Linell
Judith Potts from Blackheath born 1926 - attended 1935 - 1941 connected to Linell

George Eades 1921-1997, would have been at HGS 1932-1937 connected to Margarett
Margaret Eades(now Thompson), b 1956, at HGS 1967-1972 connected to Margarett
Ian Thompson b 1955, at HGS 1967-1974 connected to Margarett

Add any names you want added as as separate post and then I will add them to this list.
Please give birth dates and dates of attendance at HGS if known.

Please don't add living people to this Roll call without their consent
Put yourselves on if you wish

Linell I presume the dates you have given are birth dates -- is that the best way to make the list as we could presume they started attending roughly 11 years later.

Hope this makes sense

Hi MG, the dates are the when my family went to HGS. I thought that was more relative than dob's :?: What do you think :?:

Linell.

I think it might be better to go for dob -- I agree that Dates of attendance is more in line with how schools usually talk about old pupils but dob will help when comparing with BCC etc -- I will add a separate list if we get staff and put years of teaching at LGS on that as they will have not been 11 years after birth.

Edith Worton from Cradley Heath born 1894 - attended 1905 - Abt 1916 (not sure how long exactly) connected to Linell
Doris Newby from Cradley born 1894 attended 1905 - Abt 1916 connected to Linell

Was HGS ever a Junior and Secondary School? if not I would be surprised if Edith and Doris stayed there for 11 years -- they would have been 22 when they left if your dob are correct.

Margaret and Judith would have been at the top of the school when my mother started just at the start of the war -- they could well have known my Uncle Ken Shakespeare who was older than mum

Hi MG, HGS was just a Senior School, I suppose my Nan Edith Worton and her friend Doris Newby left about age 17, I don't know if they had 6th Forms then, I suppose they did? They both took their exams for B'ham University, so I can't imagine they left aged 16? So yes the date of leaving would have been about 1910/11, thanks for pointing that out.

I am sure my Mom used to talk about a Ken Shakespeare, the name definitely rings a bell.

Best Wishes from Linell.

Hi MG, well if Ken and Eileen lived in Halesowen all their lives they would have known my Mom and her parents, everyone knew everyone else back in the good old days, when it was just a small Market Town. Best Wishes from Linell.
