*Archived tbc* -Staff Record Office-Criminal Look Up Needed

Post by Acorna »

Hi All

I'm Ray and I'm new to this forum. I must say it looks very interesting.

I've been doing a tree for a friend and have come across a young lady in County Prison Staffordshire and I was wondering if someone may be able to help me out. I'm in Devon and cannot get to Staffordshire records due to work. My friend would like to know why she is in prison. My hope is that somebody here may have the time & inclination to do some research for me.

The young lady in question is MARY TUNNICLIFF b 1821 in Burslem, Staffs. She can be found in the County Prison, Staffs in the 1841 Census, her occupation was Servant. She was released before 4Q 1843 as she married a George Smith in Stoke on Trent at that time.

Thanks in advance for any help.

While I'm here, I get the impression that you are trying to create a huge Black Country tree. If I am correct and my research would help you out please let me know or point me in the correct direction to add any data I have.

Regards
Ray

Hi Ray
welcome to the forum

I think I contacted Staffs about one of my Criminal ancestors a while back and they were very very helpful
So they may be worth an email.
You could also put a post under look up requests and if anyone is going to staffs they may be able to look.
But as Pete says not sure if anyone goes to Staffs....but hey if you don't ask you don't get!

re the Black Country Connections tree this is a tree started by my cousin Gardener and I ,so do send me a pm and I will let you
know how we work it.

Footnote...

here is the Staffs link
http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/

they mentioned to me an admissions and discahrges registers but not sure which years are covered
also I think they actually have photos of some of the prisoners

What about the national archives which may help you with Staffs records and dates etc

or they gave me this .....
Online catalogue: http://www.archives.staffordshire.gov.uk/

Hi all, I am going to Stafford Archives this coming week. I have this list on their Prison Holdings:-

Staffordshire Record Office holds the following prison records:
Stafford Bridewell Register, 1792-1806
Stafford House of Correction Register, 1806-1815
Stafford Register of Debtors, 1793-1807
Stafford Register of Felons, 1793-1816
HM Prison, Stafford, Registers, Admission and Discharge Books, 1878-1908
HM Prison, Stafford, Photograph Album of Prisoners, 1883-19

Nothing there for 1843 but I will ask and get back to you from linell.

Hi Linnell

In the Prison Holdings list - would there be anything referring to the Hangmen, I'm especially interested in one George Incher he was hangman at Stafford between 1875 - 1881, I have several George's in my tree, 2 of them could be this hangman, one was my 3xGrandfather, the second was a 2nd G Granduncle, I have never been able to connect these George's to the hangman role, I've read just about everything on the net there is on the hangmen of Dudley/Stafford.

Cheers
I live in my own little world. But it's ok....they know me here!

Hi Ray, I checked the Calendar of Prisoners for Mary Tuncliffe 1843 and she wasn't there. I spoke to the Archivist, she said that if Mary had been sentenced by the Petty Sessions these records were not kept. The Archivist said that Mary may have been in for only a few weeks, maybe as a Debtor, these were not recorded. So sorry no great scandal to report on :!: Best Wishes from linell.

<LOL> Ray............

FS I asked the Archivist about your George Incher, she said the Hangman's records would be held by whoever they worked for, i.e. The Parish, The Court or The Government, you need to find out who employed them to get any info. HTH linell.
