Downloadable Parish transcripts

Post by marie »

Before registration began in 1837 - parish registers provided most of the recording of genealogic events - baptisms, marriages and burials.
Many of the transcriptions on the LDS site are from these registers. However, there were also many transcriptions done and published in the late 1800s and early 1900s as people realized that the registers were disintegrating
These transcripted books are still available as copies that can be purchased or viewed in various libraries - however - many of them - especially from the Shropshire area - are available as a free download from Google books.
Go to Google books and search for 'parish registers' and the county or parish name.
They are very legible and some have indexes. You can download them for free and then search for your family at your convenience.
Most are true copies of the register and include any extra information that was entered. (the LDS ones don't always do this) such as occupation, if the person was from another parish and sometimes the suspected father of an illegitimate child.

Remember these are books of transcripts made around 1900 - not ALL parishes were done - but it's worth trying because if you are lucky you will get a tremendous amount of information and the only cost is your time
First , make sure you are in Google book search - not just google
then try searching with "parish register wem" - when I used this, the very first entry was the downloadable one about 13M
Using Parish Register or parish record returned slightly different lists but both contained the downloadable Wem register.
There are of course other books listed that can be purchased.
Once you have found the Wem downloadable - substitute the parish names you are interested in. The free downloads nearly always have a small book page next to them in the list

Annie,
There has been a lot of action regarding transcriptions of these Parish records for online access, lately. It is always worth checking your favourite online search site regularly. (I use both Genealogist and Findmypast and both have more stuff there now that they did a couple of months ago)

Cheers
John

Most of the Worcestershire records are freely available online.

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/england/worcestershire/parish-registers.htm

http://www.wolverhamptonhistory.org.uk/resources/indexes

Staffordshire is also well covered but some major parishes, such as Shifnal, are not found online.

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/england/staffordshire/staffordshire_parish_registers.htm

Warwickshire Parish records are scarce online bu this volunteer group are excellent...

http://www.hunimex.com/warwick/opc/opc.html

Shropshire Parishes are poorly covered online.

http://www.genealogylinks.net/uk/england/shropshire/

I have found Set 1 and 2 of the Shropshire Records from S&M to be excellent products.

For non-conformist records, "The Genealogist" has the best coverage.

This takes you to the Internet Archive and is another source of downloadable parish transcripts. The link is to a search for parish records. There are a large number of registers for Shropshire and Nottinghamshire among others
