Foundling

[Baffled]

I am a female foundling born in London in July, August, September 1928. I do not know what my birth name was. I am happily married, but the person with my original name would not have a record of marriage or death; a single woman still alive! The list must have shortened considerable. I would like to determine that list. Am I mad?

So, I would like to find the names of girls born in those months, trace their details of marriage, or deaths and rub them out one at a toime. Being retired I have all the time in the world - unil my turn comes.

I don't quite understand what you mean ....
Do you want to trace EVERY female born July/Sept. qtr 1928?
I think that would be practically impossible!
You would need to go through the GRO indexes page by page and record all possibles ......
Do you know which registration district it would be listed under? London is a county .... with many different registration districts .... you need to know the district.

How do you know that your birth was registered??
It's highly likely that your birth was never registered ...... otherwise the authorities would have been able to trace your birth mother in 1928 .......

I was deposited at a Leytonstone (London) convent at the end of February 1929 and passed on to the LCC (now GLC) and judged to be 6 months old and given a 'birth' date of 31st August. I was apparently healthy and reasonably well clothed but all means of identification had been removed. This was a period of serious depression.

I visited the Records Office in about 1970 and looked at births either side of August 31st, but didn't persists for reasons you quote, but the urge for identity is strong. Curre life ntly I am my marriage certificate! I was given a name and a letter in place of a birth certificate. I subsequently visited County Hall and was told they had no idea who I was.

I have a happy life with a loving family and can l look around and forward. But there is, now and again, the urge to look over my shoulder for my early past!

Searches like this are not of great value. Some people hope to be related someone of note; Alfred the Great or Henry Tudor for instance. I just like to look at that pool of births in 1928. I am probably one of them - I might even be related to Alfred! How do I bring down a smiley?

Hi, I still think there is a possibility that your birth may not have been registered .... or registered in a district other than where you were left ......

But, if you really want to start tracing all the births then you will need access to the GRO indexes ....
If you subscribe to Ancestry (for example) then you can search the indexes page by page .....
Out of curiosity I have just checked how many images there are for surnames beginning with A in the 3rd qtr of 1928 ..... there were 35 pages!

It's not an impossible task to go through each page and pick out any that you think may be possible .... but it's not a task that I would want to undertake!

Hi,
I'm not sure whether the local records were affected or not, however, all local registrations are sent to the GRO quarterly, so the GRO reference should still be available even if the local one isn't.

If you want to start going through the indexes page by page searching for all births then you will need a site that holds the images (I personally use Ancestry, but there are other sites around that have the records, I think Findmypast also holds the indexes)
