Ward Family and Earls of Dudley

Postby Neville Bastable » Thu Jul 23, 2009 11:14 am

When William Ward titled 10th Baron of Dudley & 5th Baron Ward of Birmingham died in 1740 unmarried the Dudley Barony passed to his nephew Ferdinando Dudley Lea (see separate topic) but the Ward Barony (6th) and perhaps more importantly all the family estates to John Ward, William’s 2nd cousin. ( I can explain why, if members are interested but for the moment I’ll leave this on one side).
In 1763 John was also created Viscount Dudley and Ward. When John died in 1774 his eldest son another John became 2nd Viscount D&W 7th Baron Ward (died 1788) followed by brother William 3rd Viscount D&W 8th BW who was married to Julia Bosville and died 1823. William and Julia’s son John William became the 4th Viscount D&W 9thBW but in 1827 he was created Earl of Dudley Viscount Ednam whilst retaining the10th Barony of Ward. He died unmarried in 1833.
The family estates and the title of 10th Baron only passed to John William’s 2nd cousin William Humble Ward all other titles ceasing. ( again I can explain if members are interested) When William Humble died in 1835 his son succeeded to the 11th Barony of Ward having purchased Witley Court in 1837 but then in 1860 was created Earl of Dudley in the 2nd creation with his eldest son becoming Viscount Ednam. He had married Georgiana Moncrieffe and died in
1885
His son William Humble Viscount Ednam succeeded as the 2nd Earl of Dudley with his eldest son becoming the 2nd Viscount Ednam He had married Rachel Gurney and died in 1932.
His son William Humble Eric Viscount Ednam became the 3rd Earl of Dudley, his son the 3rd Viscount Ednam. He married Rosemary Leveson Gower and died in 1969.
The present Earl is their son.
I believe all the above to be correct but if not members comments would be appreciated as it is intended that it will be entered on bcconnections.

Farside, The family had many properties and as I understood it they moved around according to the time of the year. I have it that they had in Scotland Dunkeld and Ednam House, Screeb Lodge and Rockingham Castle in Ireland, Croggen House in Wales, an estate in Malpas in Cheshire, two houses in France and one in each of Italy and Austria besides Himley Hall, Witley Court and Dudley House in London.
I have details of some of the Dudley children principally those of the 2nd Earl William Humble (1867-1932)
He sold Witley Court in 1920 due to his declining fortune.
His wife Rachel had 7 children :-
Honor born 1892, William Humble Eric born 1894, I cannot find at the moment the birth dates of the next 3 they are Morvith, Roderick and Alexandra, finally twins born in 1907 Edward and George.
William the 1st Earl was born in 1818 and died in1885. I’m afraid I seem to have only noted the male offspring of the 1st Earl namely John, Robert, Reginald, Cyril and Gerald but I think you have confirmed this at least in part
The 3rd Earl William Humble Eric was born in 1894 as you have seen and died in 1969. I haven’t got info on his children
The 4th Earl William Humble David was born in 1920 and is still living somewhere in the London area I believe. He married if I remember correctly Maureen Swanson the film actress but again no info on the children at this moment but we won’t need this for bcc.

FarSide, Regarding the 1st Earl’s father he had been the Reverend William Humble Ward (1781-1835) a church minister. He inherited the title of Baron Ward in 1883. His wife Amelia didn’t die until 1882 and she and their unmarried daughter Rachel lived at Himley Hall as did son William until he moved to Witley Court in 1846 before he was created 1st Earl of Dudley (2nd creation) in 1860. As you probably know Witley Court was purchased from the Foley family in 1837 but William hadn’t come into his full inheritance until 1846.
A few years ago I had a very interesting conversation with a lady who was working at Witley Court at the time of the fire and watched it burning and now a confession. I with other interested friends explored Witley Court back in the 1950’s when it was fenced off and before any safety work had been carried out. Very interesting of course to us as young historians but very foolish!
I still have a piece I think of charred timber I “rescued” from the ballroom I believe it was.
I have been back a number of times since of course but as an English Heritage member.
Going back a bit in time it was during the stewardship of John Ward the 1st Viscount that Dudley castle was so badly damaged by fire (1750) and it was he who built the Himley Hall we know today (with later additions) and demolished the mediaeval one.

Many thanks Grangers 14. Yes this is the family. In 1865 the 1st Earl (2nd creation) William Ward married Georgiana Moncrieffe and in 1867 William Humble the son and heir was born. They had 5 more sons John, Robert, Reginald ,Cyril and Gerald and a daughter Edith.
Just another word FarSide on John William Ward (1781-1833) who became Viscount Dudley & Ward in 1823 on the death of his father William Ward and then he becameEarl of Dudley (1st creation) & Viscount Ednam IN 1827. Although he apparently much improved Himley Hall he was a leading politician and lived mostly at Dudley House in London using Himley Hall I believe mainly to entertain and presumably impress V I P’s.
The Ednam name came by the way from an estate he had purchased at Ednam in south east Scotland and used as you know in later generations for theEarl’s son and heir.
John William never married.

FarSide, moving back in time to the earlier Ward days the first Ward, Humble (1613-1670) married Frances Sutton (1611-1697) in 1628. In 1643 when her grandfather Edward Sutton the 5th Baron Dudley died Frances Ward (nee Sutton) succeeded him as the 6th Baroness Dudley and in 1644 her husband Humble was created 1st Baron Ward of Birmingham. I believe they had been living at Dudley Castle until the Civil War and then moved to Himley Hall. Humble played some part I believe in the War on the Royalist side but I failed to find any detail of this. I would be grateful if any members could advise. Edward the 5th Baron had died and the Castle was defended for the King, but fell towards the end of the War in 1646 and it’s fortifications were destroyed on orders of Parliament, although it still actually belonged to the Dudleys.
In 1690 Humble and Frances’s eldest son Edward (1659-1701) now the 2nd Baron Ward built some extensions to the Castle’s accommodation I believe, all to be severely damaged by the fire in 1750. Edward outlived his son William and it was his grandson Edward (1683-1704) who became 8th Baron Dudley 3rd Baron Ward. This Edward’s son another Edward died young in 1733 to be succeeded by his Uncle William 10th Baron Dudley 5th Baron Ward whose successors have been covered in some detail in an earlier posting (see also Ferdinando Dudley Lea )

FarSide, returning to the Civil War there is a story that Humble and Frances Ward persuaded the commanderof the Parliamentary forces Sir William Brereton not to damage Dudley Castle too much and in return would agree to a marriage between their son and heir Edward born 1631 (not 1659 as I wrote in the previous posting ) and Sir William’s daughter. If it is true I don’t know what the respective parties might have thought of that idea but it would appear that only the Castle fortifications were destroyed (1747) and Edward did in fact marry Frances Brereton who died in 1676. Edward died in1701 but not before he had improved the Castle. For visitors to the Castle I think he built the accommodation block between the Keep and the Gatehouse probably in the 1690’s.
William who died in 1713 and was Edward’s younger brother is of interest to us as he is of course the ancestor of todays Earls of Dudley. He married Anne Parker (1646-1672) Their son William who died in 1720 and married Mary Grey were the parents of John (1704-1774) who was created !st Viscount Dudley and Ward and his brother the Reverend William Ward, Rector of Himley who died1758 and was in fact the great grandfather of the 1st Earl of Dudley (2nd creation) of Witley Court.
Might I use this spot to dispel a vicious rumour. It wasn’t the Parliamentary forces attacking Dudley Castle who burnt down the then St Edmund’s ( bottom church) as most people seem to think. It was the Royalist defenders commanded by Sir Thomas Leveson who destroyed it to prevent the Parliamentary forces possibly using it as a forward attacking position.

FarSide, as the descent of the Dudley titles is quite complicated I thought it might be useful to list the direct ancestors (without too much detail) of the present Earls from Edward Sutton 5th Baron Dudley, which does include of course repeating some we have already covered and omitting siblings and also title holders in the 17th and 18th Centuries who are not in this direct line. Descent in every case is from father/mother to son/daughter:-

Edward Sutton 5th Baron Dudley 1567-1643.Was married to Theodosia Harrington
Ferdinando Sutton died 1621. Was married to Honora Seymour
Frances Sutton 6th Baroness Dudley 1611-1697.Married Humble Ward who became 1st Baron Ward
William Ward (brother of the heir) died1713. Was married to Anne Parker.
William Ward died1720. Was married to Mary Grey.
Rev.William Ward, rector of Himley died 1758. Was married to Elizabeth Harkes.
Humble Ward 1755 to 1785. Was married to Susannah Beecroft.
Rev.William Humble 10 th Baron Ward 1881-1835. inherited title from a second cousin. Was married to Amelia Pillans
William Ward 11th Baron Ward created 1st Earl of Dudley (2nd creation) 1818-1885 married to Georgina Moncrieffe.
William Humble Ward 2nd Earl of Dudley 1867-1932 married to Rachel Gurney.
William Humble Eric Ward 3rd Earl of Dudley 1894 –1969 married to Rosemary Leveson-Gower
William Humble David Ward 4th Earl of Dudley born 1920 and still living, married Stella Morra.
William Humble David Jeremy Ward Viscount Ednam born 1947 and still living.

I hope this makes things a little clearer for members as I know from past experience that this is the part that really bewilders people.
My knees quaked when Northern Lass suggested we might like to attempt to unpick these Dudleys. We are doing our best !
