Samuel Baker (b.1898) - COMPLETED

Post by descartes46 »

I'm trying to trace the history of Samuel Baker (b. 1898) through the records, but I can't find anything that can pin point this Samuel Baker. His grandfather was Benjamin Baker (1824-1875), and his father was Arthur Baker (b.1854). I'm looking for the following information: whether he got married, had children, and when he died. I'm finding it difficult to trace, as I dont understand the countries/boundaries properly. There seems to be a possible marriage for him (Samuel B Baker, Spouse, Lilian G Williams, Marriage, Jul 1923 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire), but I think that was a little late as he had a daughter in 1920), apparently. But I could be way off. Below is what I do know for sure:

Arthur BAKER (b.1854) m. Alice Keeley
(a) Elizabeth BAKER (1874-1942)
(b) Sarah Ann BAKER (b.1875)
(c) Thurza BAKER (b. 1879)
(d) Benjamin Arthur BAKER (1881-1904)
(e) Joseph BAKER (1883-1935) m. Isabella
(g) Harry BAKER (1886-1958) m. Sarah Hopkins
(h) Rose Emme BAKER (1888-1949)
(i) Samuel BAKER (b. 1898)

Many thanks for your help.

This is what you have on Arthur & Alice Baker and their children

Arthur BAKER (b.1854) m. Alice Keeley
(a) Elizabeth BAKER (1874-1942)
(b) Sarah Ann BAKER (b.1875)
(c) Thurza BAKER (b. 1879)
(d) Benjamin Arthur BAKER (1881-1904)
(e) Joseph BAKER (1883-1935) m. Isabella
(g) Harry BAKER (1886-1958) m. Sarah Hopkins
(h) Rose Emme BAKER (1888-1949)
(i) Samuel BAKER (b. 1898)

I have highlighted Thurza/Thirza because this involves her

Birth: BAKER, THIRZA - MMN: KEELEY (From the GRO web site)
GRO Reference: 1878 D Quarter in BIRMINGHAM Volume 06D Page 46

Thirza with parents in 1881 at 338 Green Lane, Walsall
Thirza with parents in 1891 at 338 Green Lane, Walsall

Now this is Samuel Baker born abt. 1898 where he is stated as "Son" of Arthur Baker

1901 Census: 25 Margaret St., Walsall
Arthur Baker, Head.Wid, 46, Pavior for Corporation
Benjamin Baker, Son, 20, Pavior Help for Corporation
Joseph Baker, Son, 18, Iron Carter
William Baker, Son, 16, Carter
Harry Baker, Son, 14, Iron Carter Helper
Rose Baker, Dau, 13
Samuel Baker, Son, 3
(All born Walsall)

1911 Census: 167 Wolverhampton Road, Walsall
Arthur Baker, Head.Wid, 56, Pavior/General Labourer, Coventry
Harry Baker, Son.S, 24, General Labourer
Rose Emmie Baker, Dau.S, 22, House Keeper at Home
Samuel Baker, Son, 13, School
(Others born Walsall)

These are my thoughts:-

Birth from the GRO Web Site

Birth: BAKER, SAMUEL CLODE - NO MOTHER'S MAIDEN NAME
GRO Reference: 1898 M Quarter in WALSALL Volume 06B Page 762

This is his baptism

Baptism: 23 Dec 1897 St Paul, Walsall, Staffs (FreeREG) (Birth: 1 Dec 1897)
Samuel Clode Baker - Mother: Thirza Baker - Abode: 25 Margaret St.
(This is the address where Samuel is living in 1901 Census)

So it appears that Samuel was illegitimate and is his 2nd name Clode the surname of his father??

????1921 Census: 29 High Street, North Woolwich E16
Samuel Baker, Border.S, 23y6m, Walsall Staffs, General Labourer/Henleys(?) Works, Woolwich (B: c1897)
Head of Household: John Ellis & wife Nelly Ellis

This looks like Samuel in 1939, mainly because of his Birth Date.

1939 Register: 42 Winifred St., Woolwich
Samuel Baker, Birth: 1 Dec 1897, Married, Civil Service Clerk Ministry of Labour
Rose E. Fuller, Birth: 13 Jan 1899, Divorced, Forelady Jelly Manufacturer

As the saying goes "I may be clutching at straws" here but, is this his marriage because of living in Woolwich in 1921 Census and 1939 Register?

Marriage: Sep Qtr 1935 Woolwich 1d 3276
Samuel Baker & Emma E Anderson

Death: Mar Qtr. 1986 Essex Vol: 15 Page: 1798
Samuel Clode Baker - Birth: 1.12.1897

I found this WW1 record, but I really don't know if this is your Samuel and thought I would included it just in case.

Thanks guys! That's been enormously helpful and explains why he disappeared and didn't follow the conventional path.

Kind regards,
D.
