Dennis Green was the son of Alfred and Sarah Jane Green of 24 Banners Lane, Overend, Cradley, and he attended Cradley C of E School. He enlisted in the Devonshire Regiment but was transferred to the 2nd/2nd Battalion of the London Regiment. He was probably one of the thousands of 'young' soldiers held back in early 1918. After the halting of the German Spring offensives these men were urgently sent out to the front line. The first attempt at an Allied recovery was the Battle of Amiens which started on the 8th August 1918. It achieved surprise and won a remarkable advance. It took so many German prisoners that for Ludendorff it was 'the black day in the history of the German army'. It led to the Advance to Victory but among the casualties was Private Dennis Green who was killed in action on this day. He was 19 years of age and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois,Cradley, Halesowen and Cradley C of E School Memorials.
