Hi,

Found a reference to an ancestor:-

"1841: Flask Walk, St John Hampstead, Edmonton, Middlesex & London, England,
Thomas Powell, 43, Labourer, Not born in County 1798."


When it says "Not born in County" does this mean the county of London please, & if so, where did the county extend to in 1841, so that I could search neighbouring counties for Thomas Powell's birth details?

What was in the County of London (Metropolis) at this time, and what counties were outside, surrounding it please?

In 1841 Edmonton would have been in Middlesex. If you look at the image on Ancestry there is a page number at the bottom, if you change that to 1 and press enter you'll get to the front page of that registration district's entries, the top lines give info about County etc.

Most of what we now know as London was split between Middlesex, Surrey, Kent & Essex, only the very central part was actually London. It wasn't until 1889 that the County of London was created, wiki has an article on it.

So the 'not born in county' is just telling me Thomas Powell was born outside of Middlesex please? Which means I can search contiguous counties for his details?

Thanks. Am hoping that this London family was native to London for a long time. Thomas' [also spelled 'Thos'] dates are a bit erratic.
