Mordecai Skelton

Post by Pin0977 »

I am trying to find out where to get a birth certificate for my 2 x Great Grandpa, Mordecai Skelton. He was seemingly born in Yorkshire but his birth year ranges from 1826 -1833 depending on what document I'm looking at.

I can't find anything concrete (I have his marriage and death cert and census records from when he came to Scotland) about his birth so I wouldn't know which Parish to look into to try and find him.

Has anyone been faced with anything similar before and they could give me some pointers please?

Thanks.

You will not be able to get a birth certificate if born before 1837, if you are lucky you might find a baptism record, do you have his fathers name?

Thank you for replying.

I do, I have both his Mother and Father's names and where they were married. By the looks of it his Father was baptised in Cathedral Saint Peter, Sheffield, York and then married in the parish of Sheffield in the County of York but there's no note on it of which Church.

My question would be how do I figure out where to contact and how do I do it at all?

Thank you so much!!

They are William Skelton and Martha Bramall (although I have seen this spelled in a few different ways). William was baptised on 30.09.1798 and Martha was born around 1803 in Bradfield, Yorkshire.

Married on 16.01.1822 in St Peter Cathedral, Sheffield.

I think they had about 9 children including my GG Grampa, Mordecai.

If you need any more information (and I have it) I'd be happy to share it with you.

Thank you again.

I notice you've got the 1846 acquittal in Shropshire registers attached to him on Ancestry.

If you're confident that record relates to the right person, if it was me, I'd be checking the full registers for Dawley Magna, Shropshire. There's another Mordecai Skelton born there 1800, died 1817. I would think it's extremely possible, likely even, that this might be a parent's sibling and your Mordecai was named in his memory. He doesn't seem to show up in any indexes but, if you're at a brick wall, it's worth trawling through the original register.

It may also be worth taking the 1800 Mordecai and constructing a tree of his relatives, working forwards. I've done this on occasion and it can sometimes turn up relatives on later censuses which make sense of earlier mysteries.

Thank you so much, they're all great ideas and I'll definitely do that.

At this point I'm still only assuming it's my Mordecai as I didn't think Mordecai Skelton would have been a common name but I could obviously be very wrong about that!

Thank you again for the help, it really is appreciated.
