Hello from Virginia

Postby Lbligh » Mon Feb 22, 2021 3:41 am

I am a new member here, and though I am a beginner in UK genealogy, I am fairly experienced with US research.

My specific interest in the UK is the Black Country. A month ago I had never heard of the region, so I have a lot to learn. I am trying to trace the members of the Tromans family who emigrated to Baltimore and Philadelphia in the early 1800s. Other names of interest are Brettle/Brettell abd Cottle. Many seem to be connected with Rowley Regis.

My main tree is on Ancestry.com.

Hi Lbligh, welcome to the forum
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Hi Lbligh welcome. We have information on Black Country Connections Cottle's and Brettell's emigrating to America and being kidnapped by Native Americans.

Welcome to the Forum. I have both Bretell and Tromans in my extended family tree but don't know anything about them, they just appeared when I was doing my own research. As far as I can tell my Great Grandfather Billingham's sister married a Joseph Tromans in 1867 and my Great Great Grandfather Billingham's sister Fanny married a William Moreton and their daughter Sarah married a John Brettell in 1869.

Rob, I just came across that terrible story! Rachel Brettell Cottle was never seen again! I have a fantasy that she lived a long happy life with the tribe, and that someday we will find DNA evidence of her half-Brettell half-Sioux children.

I have six Cottles among my DNA matches, descended from that family, and their connection to my tree dates from well before the Brettell-Cottle abduction, so it's perfectly possible....
