ARC TBC John Willetts - is this him?

Postby AlanJ » Sat Aug 31, 2019 8:32 pm

Hello to all. I'm a long time lurker, first time poster.
I, like a number of others on this forum have connections with the offspring of Elisha Willetts & Susannah Tibbetts who married in 1834.
One of their sons was John, but I have never found a birth or Baptism record for him.
I have recently found a birth registered for a Willetts male with no first name in the GRO listings.

This birth shows a mothers maiden name of Titbetts (their spelling).
GRO reference : 1840 S Quarter in DUDLEY UNION Volume 18 Page 282.

I ordered the digital image of the the birth record and it contains the following information.

:When Born - 1 August 1840, Peartree Lane
:Name, if any - [blank]
:Sex - Boy
:Name of Father - Elisha Willetts
:Name of Mother- Hannah Willetts formally Tibbetts
:Occupation - Nailor
:Informant - The Mark (X) of Hannah Willetts, Mother, Peartree Lane
:When Registered - 18 september 1840
:Registrar - John Whitehouse

I have not (yet) found a death that would match with that birth.
In the 1841 Census, 9 months later, there is no son relating to that birth but John is showing as 3 years old.
I'm hoping someone has other information that will link or eliminate this birth.
Any offers?
There will be a locally held copy of the same register somewhere. Can anyone let me know where that will be?

Hopefully yours,
AlanJ

Many thanks for your replies.
I have been able to identify the same birth on West Midlands BMD.
Reference is RR/3/298. The 298 is the record entry number.
This locally held register also shows the child as having no first name so there is little point in ordering a certificate from that as the information is the same.
I was hoping someone had identified this child to say if it really was John or someone else.

I will try and eliminate this with a possible death between then and the 1841 census.

Thanks again for your input.

If you had DNA test done it would confirm the link with out the certificate unless you are related through another line as well time to get up to date jan
A person should have an opinion on everything, It becomes tact whether you reveal that opinion or not.

Marriage: 7 Sep 1862 St Edmund, Dudley (FreeREG)
John Willetts, FA, B, Horse Nail Maker, Dudley, Elisha Willetts, Horse Nail Maker
Emma Rowe, FA, S, Dudley, Father: Deceased no other details
Wit: Thomas Foxall, Sarah Willetts

Children of Elisha Willetts & Susannah Tibbetts on BCC

WILLETTS, - TITBETTS
GRO Reference: 1840 S Quarter in DUDLEY UNION Volume 18 Page 282

WILLITTS, MOSES TIBBETT
GRO Reference: 1841 D Quarter in DUDLEY UNION Volume 18 Page 279

WILLETTS, EMANUEL TIBBETTS
GRO Reference: 1848 S Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 18 Page 301

WILLETTS, ELIJAH TIBBETTS
GRO Reference: 1850 D Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 18 Page 292

In Column 10 on a birth certificate it states "name entered after registration" or "baptismal name if added after registration". I wonder if the parents went back to the Register Office and asked for his name to be added to his birth certificate and would be on the certificate held at the Register Office, with the GRO not being informed of a name.

I had a similar situation, but with no luck of a name on the birth certificate being added.

The birth certificate which you found on West Mids BMD RR/3/298 is held at Sandwell Register Office so may be worth a phone call to ask the question.

I can't see any baptisms for John and his siblings.

I agree with NL that Hannah is Susannah.

I have still got nothing that proves his birth.
Many thanks to all for offering info etc.
I'm fine with this going to archive for the time being.

The birth certificate from GRO shows no first name.
I received a copy of this.

The same birth in the register at Sandwell archives also has no first name as shown in the West Mids BMD index. RR/3/298.
I have not ordered a copy of this.
The reason being, I have never heard of, or seen, a first name being added after the registration, although a column is available for doing just that.
I may eventually order this, if I feel like wasting a few quid.

I agree with BC Wench that John and his siblings are not showing in any baptism records, so they may yet come to light.
I have searched through multiple death indexes up to the 1841 census but can find nothing that would match with this birth.
I believe that this birth relates to John Willetts, son of Elisha and Susannah, but I cannot yet PROVE it.

Just a quick update.
I have quoted the recorded date of birth for this child as 1st August. That should be the 10th August.
Apologies for not double checking that earlier.
