You knew her as Dolly? I always thought Dolly was a nick name for Dorthy? My Nan was Dorothy, known as Dolly.

This really did have me searching. Like you I would never have guessed that her real name was Hannah. I eventually resolved the riddle by asking a parish magazine for the Great Ecclestone area to publish my request for help. A couple of ladies that had known “Dolly” replied and were able to confirm sufficient details to assure me that I had the correct person and relationship even down to Shepard’s Farm in Elswick. From what I remember she did have quite a round face, perhaps it was just a childhood nickname.

Trouble with this is the missing link -your mother`s birth cert would give the parents occupation and whereabouts but I can understand for privacy why they are not disclosed.

Any of the 5 birth certificates for Elizabeth's surviving children or even the marriage certificate for Elizabeth and Joseph is what I have been searching for.

Thanks for your input RF, Mary Thomas (my grandmother) was married to Albert Varney on 30 Sep 1911 at St Saviour's Church, Saltley, Birmingham (GRO Volume: 6d Page: 590) age on marriage certificate recorded as 26 which ties in with 1886 date of birth. However still no sign of a birth registration for her or her 4 siblings, or a marriage registration for parents, Elizabeth ? and Joseph Thomas. Kind regards, Ron

Hello “Norther Lass” thanks for your interest. I have managed to trace and document Hannah Elizabeth Knight from cradle to grave. I had a vague recollection of visiting an “Aunt Dolly” back in the 1950’s in Great Eccelston with my father. This turns out to be same person – Married Robert Benson 21 October 1925 in Bispham, Lancashire. The 1939 register has them living at Shepherds Farm, Elswick along with her mother. Hannah passed away with no issues 14 October 1987.

Ok so if you have the marriage info I have some questions
Do you have the fathers name for Hannah Elizabeth
If you do then we can find the marriage for Hannah and an unknown knight
Unless you have that info too
Need the marriage of Hannah and an unknown knight

Good point, but I do not see where this will help in finding Grandmothers maiden name. I have been unable to find a marriage record for Hannah Thomas (b 1873) that I am confident with, even begin to suspect he may have had a wife elsewhere. In the 1911 census Hannah displays uncertainty as to how long she has been married 7 or 12 years? However Hannah Elizabeth's birth certificate, states fathers name as Thomas Knight. Her marriage certificate also gives fathers name as Thomas Knight (Deceased) occupation Farmer. Hope this helps you.
