ARC TBC Richard Hill, born about 1810 in Yorkshire area

Postby Beatles78 » Sun Mar 10, 2019 10:28 pm

Hi all,

This references this archived post, which I didn't want archived: viewtopic.php?f=78&t=20014&p=198287&hilit=richard+hill#p198287

I'm still at a brick wall on him. I posted the naturalization papers but no one replied. Just don't know where to go from here. Was he a foundling? I had my father, Richard Hill, take the yDNA test on familytreedna.....but he has a handful of Hammond matches, no Hill matches at a high level. So does that mean Richard was a foundling? Or that there are just no Hill relatives who tested and match him?

1) I've found no obit for him.
2) I found a death certification, with "don't know" as his parents names.

Who is he? 2 documents have said that he's from Yorkshire....with no other information. Just found a potential passenger list with other people who settled in the same area as Indiana on it (assume it's him), and a naturalization record.

HELP!!

Thank you,
Stephanie

Hi Stephanie, we have a policy to archive topics after a certain period of inactivity and this is usually done after a notification has been put up on the thread. You can apply to the mod of each section to have the topic re-activated if you wish.
If you didn't get a reply it was probably because we're as flummoxed as you are, the Staffies may be good but they are only human.

Thanks for the clarification on deactivation. I guess i'll just stay put here.

I *THINK* this is him (even though his age differs) - based on the familiar names around him who ended up settling in the same town in Indiana. https://immigrantships.net/v7/1800v7/hope18410528.html

Also, I tried attaching his naturalization papers but you don't accept PDF and I can't get it small enough for jpeg. :( Anyway...in Richard's words, he states that he "reached" the United States on 16 June 1841. That ship I referred to above *arrived*(?) on 28 May 1841. This seems too close a coincidence for it not to be the same Richard. Could they have been held for 18 days before entering into the US? I have no idea of the protocol back then when immigrating.

Thank you in advance!

So no one has an idea about where to go from here, I gather from the silence?

Presumably, would you like all 4000 of our members to confirm that?

Thanks Jimmy. That is actually MY entry on findagrave.com. We went down to that cemetery and that's what is on his tombstone for his birthday! It's too bad we can't "assume" any date - even on a gravestone! But that's what I have. I know the death date on there is correct 100%.

Hi all,

So looking at a potential ship manifest and his naturalization record, Richard Hill could have been born in 1813 instead of 1810 (like is on his gravestone.) On his biography in Indiana, it says he was born in 1813 in England. Served a 4 year apprenticeship in London. The naturalization record from 1844 states Richard is "about 30 years of age" ...which could also make his birth year 1813.

On a census, it says he was from Yorkshire, England. Another person in the area was also from Yorkshire. Alice Ann Nelson - later Newlin. Upon looking her up, she was on the same ship manifest as the Richard Hill (1841 Barque Hope)....and upon researching her more - she was born in Dent, Yorkshire, England. This is the same city that the Chapmans are from -- Richard's future in laws...also on that same ship.

Is it possible Richard is from Dent also? Born in 1813? Can anyone see anything in English records showing a Richard Hill born in Dent in that year or around that year?

Thank you in advance!

Hi again all,

A bit more information and wondered what your thoughts were on this. On his naturalization papers, it states he is from "York County, England."

A poster on Ancestry.com stated that there is an Agnes Nelson, who married Thomas Hill on 30 Apr 1808 • Dent, Yorkshire, England. They had 3 kids:

Baptised at Hubberholme chapel (Arncliffe) as sons of Thomas Hill:

21 May 1809 Leonard son of Thomas Hill of Cray, Farmer
1 Jan 1811 Richard son of Thomas Hill of Cray
13 Dec 1812 Thomas son of Thomas Hill of Deepdale

There is a burial in Dent 2 Mar 1815 for an Agnes Hill. Is it possible to find a gravestone and an age at death for her?

In 1841 there is a Thomas Hill aged 60 (rounded) Cattle Dealer at Buckden, Parish of Arncliffe
On 20 Dec 1846 there is a burial at Hubberholme for Thomas Hill of Buckden, aged 69

I'm trying to figure out if the above Richard is my 3x great grandfather - i've been at a brick wall with his parents.

Thank you!

Hello,

With help from a good Samaritan, I have a possibly family ....a Hill family from Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England. Parents Thomas Hill born 27 DEC 1776 Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England and Agnes Nelson, born 06 Sep 1788 Dent, Yorkshire, England.

My question is does anyone know of any living descendants of the above Hills....so I can possibly find a DNA connection to one of them to prove once and for all, that my Richard belongs to this family.

I would be forever grateful and happy to provide any additional information to help!!

Thanks so much,
Stephanie Hill

Is this still a Brickwall, or have you solved it?
