Hello,
I have a brick wall for my 3x great grandfather, Richard Hill, who was born about 1810 in "Yorkshire" area. I haven't stumbled upon any more descriptive places of birth, nor do I know his parents names. On his death record, it says "don't know" for his mother and father. Down below is what I DO know:
Richard Hill
Born about 1810 (Have seen March of 1811, March 11, 1810, etc), Yorkshire
Died on November 16, 1900 in Fountain County, IN.
His bio in Indiana says: born in England in 1813; settled in Montgomery County, IN in 1853. He served an apprenticeship of 4 years as a butcher, in the neighborhood of London. He was a democrat and Protestant.
He first appeared (so far) in the US in 1843 when he married Sarah Ann Chapman on January 6, 1843 in Parke County, IN.
They had 3 sons. George C, born July 17, 1843; Thomas, born March 4, 1845; and James, born January 25, 1848.
The 1900 census states that he immigrated to the US in 1840. I have found a passenger list for a ship called the Barque Hope from Liverpool, England to New York on 28 March 1841. It says Richard is 28 here, which would put him being born either 1813 or 1812, but it's possible. In any event, I think it's probable that it's him as there are other names on this ship who end up living in the same county as Richard in Indiana. Chapmans (these are relatives of his eventual wife, Sarah, who was born in OH), and Nelsons, to name a couple. Is there any way to find out further information on passengers or where they came from before boarding as to confirm if this was him or not? http://immigrantships.net/v7/1800v7/hope18410528.html
Otherwise, I have no obituary I have found for him, only a death record. His sons died before he did, in the 1890s. His wife Sarah Ann Chapman died in 1909 and there is an obituary for her.
Any assistance with this would be so greatly appreciated!
Thank you very much,
Stephanie Hill
