Certificate problems

Postby gillk16 » Thu Jul 17, 2014 11:28 am

Thomas Skinner b c 1823 Stratford on Avon, clockmaker.
1851 census - wife Elizabeth - can find no record of their marriage
1861 census - wife Emma
1862 marriage to Emily Mary Hinchin (sig shows Minchin) (think this is same Emma as 1861) - both wid - father George Hitchin wit James Pyle
1864 Alice Emma Mary born
1867 - my gggm Anne Emily born - birth cert attached - mother Emily Mary Ford - can find no marriage Thos Skinner/EMF
1871 census - widow living with dau Anna and Rose
1881 census - Alice Emma Mary living with Rose & Charles Simmons (sister)
Rose Minchin & Charles Simmons marriage - AEM witness - Rose father William Hennesy Minchin, d
1860 Wm Hennessy Minchin m Emily Mary Pyle, her fa George, butcher
Daughter Rose Harriet b 1861, Wm d before her birth

Sorry this is so lengthy. The link to me seems to be AEM being a sister to Rose on the 1881 and a witness to her wedding. This must mean that the Emily Mary married to Thos is the same one as Emily Mary Ford. So - why was George (butcher)'s name different on the marriage cert? And why was Emily Mary's name wrong on the birth cert? Could 2 registrars have made mistakes???

And apparently my copies of the certs are too big so can't upload them

Gill

Any thoughts gratefully received!

I think George (butcher) is down as Hitchin on Emily Mary's marriage to Thomas Skinner simply because the registrar made an error. Must have asked for father's name and heard George. She clearly signs it as Minchin.

I don't know about the birth certificate.

Where was young Alice Emma Mary in 1871?

Yes I had found Alice with Mary Garrett - but can now justify it! Mary was her paternal grandmother, but had remarried hence the different name. And thank you for the 1841 census, yes I'm sure it's her, no sign of husband, must have already died.

Here are the certificates I was talking about and thanks to Sandra for resizing them for me!
I'm pretty sure the marriage cert is for Emily Minchin (signature quite clear) but no idea how the father's name got muddled, unless it was a registrar with poor concentration!
The birth certificate, again, is quite clearly Ford as the mother's maiden name. I have now sent off for the sister's birth cert as a double check. Again, could it just be a registrar being poor at his job?
There are so many links to the Pyle family that I'm sure she is the correct wife. Still trying to find Thomas Skinner#s wife from the 1851 census though!

The 1861 Emma is the right age, and I suppose that birthplaces are notoriously unreliable, but as Emily Mary and daughter are in the 1861 with her parents and sister+family I think it is questionable.
Thomas must have been quite a guy! Even discounting Emma he married twice for sure plus the elusive Elizabeth...

Oh you're absolutely right, I hadn't picked that up about the 1861 census. So he was married then - also had a thing about girls with names beginning with E! And the marriage to Jane didn't last ... He's been the bane of my life, the only consistency is that he was a clock maker!
Back to the drawing board .....
