Ancestor was in 5th Division Guards based Leeds - help?

Post by usignuolo »

I have tracked my ancestor, I think, via the 1881 census, to Leeds Barracks where he is recorded as a member of the 5th Division Guards. But that is all it says. 5th Division of what? What regiment etc? Can anyone help?

Hi
Are you asking about William Jackson?
On the 1881 where it says "Dn" it could mean Dragoon rather than Division. So possibly the 5th Dragoon Guards?

OK. well same thing really. On the first image for that set there is a John Francis Green born 1857. He is down as "Lieutenant 5th Dragoon Guards". All the rest are down as "5 Dn Guards" but I expect it means the same. You can Google Dragoon Guards and read about the history.
