John Moore of Cradley 1870's

Post by Sharon »

Hi lovely people!
Thanks for your recent help trying to find out if John Moore of Cradley stopped being a carter and became a shopkeeper in Cradley High Street in the 1870's...
I said I would send for a death cert. & keep you posted..it came today...more mystery.! (what else!)
John Moore, aged 50,carter (so far so good!) died at 2 Foxoak Street, Rowley Regis on 4th April 1879 of bronchitis, cardiac disease.
The death was registered by Ellen Moore, sister in law, present at death, address 1 Foxoak Street.
John's daughter Clara, who married William Guise at Old Hill church July 26th 1880 has her father as deceased.
One of the witnesses is an Ellen Moore...

anybody make a link? If I'm wrong, anyone want a certificate?!

I missed the first thread on this and so might have missed something but is there a problem with the facts that you have given -- they seem to fit well to me -- although they don't confirm that he was a shopkeeper in Cradley High Street they don't disprove it -- he could still have believed that being a carter was his main occupation and lived away from the shop!

Hi Sharon, for me the fact that Ellen Moore was both a Witness to Clara's Marriage and recorded on John's death certificate it must be your John, plus the fact that you know he died before 1881. You can now spend time finding the Ellen Moore connection.

Yes Peter, Providence Street was round the corner from Foxoak Street.

Well done Sharon, from Linell.

Just noticed this picked up from Peter, so Alfred Henry gives John's Occupation as a Carter when he Married Emily Yardley. There is another bit of good evidence for you Sharon.

Hi all! Thanks again..I'm beginning to believe it now!
Thanks for the 1881 census for Foxoak St., PeterD -didn't know how to do this.. Is there any value in looking for Ellen Moore there in 1891 & 1871?
Thanks for your support Linell...I first asked about this here is 2009 !
I have copies of Clara (1880), Harry & Laura Bache m 20 Oct 1884 John Henry m Mary Harris Reddal Hill 1877 & Ann m Jesse Round Cradley 1889. John is only mentioned as deceased on Clara's. He is a carter/horse driver on the rest, & John Henry on John Henry's!Of the remaining 2 children, -first 2 born ,Charles m Sarah Bridgewater June 1879 father as "grocer" ( yet to get a copy from archives), no copy yet of Alfred Henry & Emily/Emma Yardley and Thomas m Hannah? -I have no record..Can only see Ellen Moore as witness on Clara's so far..maybe on Charles & Thomas'?. John's wife died in 1877, maybe auntie Ellen helped look after the children?

I would really appreciate any help/suggestions in tracing/proving Ellen Moore. I know there was an Ellen & William living in Blackheath,1871-1891-ironically listed as greengrocer, (fishmonger, potato salesman & glovemaker!) In 1891 living in Halesowen St next to a George Moore..same as you've mentioned Peter, with the Ben Crump boarder. In 1891 a niece Ellen Clift is staying, & Thomas Clift in 1871-Possibly Ellen Moore's maiden name?
I'll look at that Hereford link PeterD..thanks again.

I started family treeing to find some ancestors for my dad...sadly he died last year. He was a born and bred Cradley Heath man. Wish I could tell him his Gt grandad had lived nearby in Foxoak Street!

Thank you all...

Thanks again all

Forgot to add Sharon, that some 'Shops' were in fact, just front rooms or a lean to on a house, the same with Pubs, they weren't always purpose built properties as we have today, no neon lights.
