On the 1851 Census Herbert's down as Sarah's son.
On the 1861 Census he's down as her grandson! Sarah would have been about 54 at the time of his birth, so it's more probable that he's her grandson.

Can anyone sort out who his parents were??

He doesn't seem to appear on any of the census's with the family, but it fits as far as Elizabeth marrying in 1850. Maybe he died or was adopted. Have you found him on any of the census's Jimmy?

That doesn't seem to help much, as I haven't a Benjamin Hadley connected with Sarah and James Hadley. He may of course have married and moved out of the family home before the 1841 census.
