I'm devastated by that poor man in Birmingham, giving CPR to a person he didn't know, who had been hit by some ???? in a car. Only to be told, his 21 year old son was lying behind him, also hit by the same car. He swapped places to give CPR to his son, who died.

I don't understand how plastic bullets and water cannon are supposed to work. The trouble is caused by very mobile small groups. This is not some big demonstration at a fixed point.
I think that the authorisation is just an empty threat. There was a senior ex-police bloke yesterday who said that tests had been done in London (over night and secretly some while ago) and although they work in Belfast they just don't work in London. I think that what will work best is rapid arrests and detainment even if they wind up released with no sentence in the end. At least some of these kids will not want to be in prison.

And that guy who lost his son was amazing. I hope that he can be encouraged to work in the local government in some way, he was everything that they need.

Reading lots of expert analyst theories in the last 24 hours and the one I tend to agree with is this....

When the riots occured in 1980s the looting and property damage was restricted and the anger was towards the state and the Police who represented that state.

The 1980's rioters had sense of community and would never torch their neighbours business.

Because the modern youth has so much welfare thrown at them they have not experienced the sense of community spirit that comes from a shared struggle to survive.

They have no ties to their community and the emphasis has been on destruction and looting rather than a real protest against anything specific.

Some will put up a feeble argument about cutbacks by the current government but really, that has not been emphasised in their action or words.

The Police have been innefectual because everything they have done since the 1980's riots is scrutinised and picked apart.

Decisions that have to be made in a split second in life and death situations have been criticised by suited men in the safety of thier office.

So the Police have no done any baton charges or cornered groups of youth to arrest them as they no longer feel they would be supported in their actions.

After seeing how the Polce were treated after similar riots in Australia, I can only agree with their concern.

I would prefer the police to have the powers they need and to be able to crack anyone over the head, when necessary. I think they are being given an impossible job right now, they keep saying they are dealing with things 'Robustly'. Well I don't agree and to use an old expression, you can't make an omlette, without breaking eggs. People who don't want to find themselves on the wrong end of a truncheon should keep out of areas of trouble. Simples!

I agree all the talking tough doesn't get us anywhere
We need someone to act tough
and get on with the job of protecting the public.

We are too soft on a sector of society that think the world
owes them a living, we are a soft touch.

And what is the full "weight of the law"
what will they actually get?

The public has had enough and is now wanting to see some action
bring in the Water Cannons and not in 24hours! have them there ready,
use the Batons, Dogs Army whatever it takes to make decent folk feel safe
in their own neighbourhood and not under seige.

And let's not forget these thugs are not representative of the youth of today
that was shown by the youngsters that have been helping clear up and what our own
teenagers say and think about this sorry state of affairs.

It's time the ME Generation learnt that they can't have what they want when they want it.
It's time to take back our Society where we know what is right and wrong
It's time to get tough Make a few Omlettes?..............no Scramble em!

I don't think so, most of them (750 yesterday) are either on remand or going through the Court System, some Courts have been operating through the night, other criminals are in hiding, waiting for the Police to come knocking.

We were in Paris a few years ago and went past a group of police with light weight body armour on, that's what our lot need, and the powers to really crack down on these idiots!

There is a petition here to stop any convicted rioters receiving state benefits:-

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/7337

David Cameron has also said that they will loose their Council Houses - GOOD.

From what I heard today, the people involved have been from a broad part of society, including students and estate agents, not just gang members and the unemployed. Age wise the range was 11-64 years!

Hi all, yes the Petition Site has crashed, keep trying.........

Gene P yes the CCTV has been used to identify hundreds of rioters, people have also sent in images from their mobile phones, almost 1000 suspects have now been arrested at the last count. Not heard about any CCTV being damaged. Great to see the Police smashing in their doors and dragging them out in handcuffs today. Yes Sue, I heard that the ages were from 11 - 47, and some are professionals, think it is a tiny minority though.
