I don't live in the UK, so maybe I shouldn't comment but....

As far as cutting public services, benefits etc, raising taxes - if the government doesn't do this how is it supposed to pay it's debts, the incresed burden of unemployment benefit etc etc. The UK does have a deficit, so if this not a solution (probably not perfect, but they seldom are), what should it do so that it doesn't end up like Greece or Ireland?

They'd probably do something similar! Most parties seem to be somewhere in the middleground these days.

They could start by collecting the billions (yes billions) of unpaid tax and fines that a certain senior civil servant in HMRC (Dave Harknett) has told some of the larger companies (e.g. Vodaphone) that they don't have to pay (as has been done in Germany and France). They could follow up with fining those responsible for mismanaging the British banking industry (in the same way that the Americans have done with their domestic banking industry) which would collect another billion or so. They could then go on to plug the loophole that allows extremely wealthy non-doms who actually reside in the country to not contribute one penny in taxation here as has been done in virtually every other European country which would add hundreds of thousands to the annual tax take. They might then consider closing the 'tax havens' of the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar, the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands and others that allow shady businessmen and rulers the world over to 'hide' their wealth from the taxman. They could prevent British businesses from shifting their profits to other, lower tax-rate countries through the kind of non-existent companies that have allowed the owners of the likes of Southern Cross to take their profits whilst leaving their residents in a parlous state and countless other scams that are available to those with the money to buy them.

But they won't because it would mean that the politicians and senior civil servants wouldn't be able to look forward to all the cushy directorships that they take up when they 'retire' from their 'proper' jobs, jobs that are paid for by the taxpayer as are the comfortable pensions that they voted in for themselves.

But it doesn't really matter which party is in power - as far as all those things go, SRD (and I do agree, that something should be done), most politicians wont unless they thourght it would get them extra votes.

Noooooo! He visited here a couple of years ago and a) he is really slimey and b) he said things which were so patently untrue that I could not believe he got away with it.

well that speech was made last year and now its so true, you forget the majority of brits dont want to be a part of a united europe that why the major polictical parties have back out of the referendum they promised.

I certainly agree with him that iceland should not join the EU (still think he is slimey though). We have a coalition government, one party hell bent on joining and the other totally against it! What a shambles.

iceland is best stoping as a trading partner with europe rather than go full membership, its only a small population with a good welfare system, if they go full membership nothing stopping a influx from eastern europe as open boarders and even 30,000 - 40,000 would cripple icelands economy never mind the million + weve seen.
