*Archive?* Hodgett & Chant family

Post by apowell »

Hi everyone  ,

I am attempting to trace my ancestor Eliza Chants' family further. I've managed to find out some information but would be grateful for any further feedback that may help.

This is what I've found so far:
Job & Jane Chant
Eliza baptised 29 MAY 1808 Bridge Street Independent church, Walsall
Caleb baptised 04 APR 1810 Bridge Street Independent church, Walsall

I've been unable to find a marriage entry for Job Chant & Jane anywhere ???
I've been unable to find any further entry for Caleb Chant eg. marriage or death entry ???

The surname of Chant doesn't appear very often in documents for the Walsall area but seemed to be concentrated around Birmingham. I did however find Job Chant Buckle Maker (roller) Dudley St, Walsall in the 1818 Parson and Bradshaw Trade Directory but he doesn't appear in the next Trade Directory of 1828.

I found a possible Baptism for Job Chant:

Charles & Catherine
JOB HODGET CHANT 30 SEP 1783 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire

This fits nicely :
Charles Chant & Catherine Hodgetts
12 OCT 1768 Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire

Chant Family
I think this is the Baptism for Charles Chant:
Thomas Chant
Charles Young Chant 13 February 1747 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire

The date and place fits for a possible marriage of Thomas Chant:
Thomas Chant & Elizabeth Walford
01 SEP 1743 Saint Martin, Birmingham, Warwickshire

The problem is why was Charles's middle name Young which suggests to me that was his mothers maiden name and another child was also called William Young Chant. I can't find any other possible marriage entry for Thomas Chant and a Young around that time.

I also found this which was interesting but no idea why they were living in London (possibly work) and I was also wondering about the Accidental death entry:

Charles Young Chant (age 45) Buried 30 May 1793, St John Street, St James, Clerkenwell, Islington
Thomas Young Chant (man) Accidental, Buried February 1794, St Luke, Old Street, Islington

Hodgetts family

I found two possible Baptism entries for Catherine:
Job Hodgetts
Catherine 30 NOV 1748 Saint Phillips, Birmingham, Warwickshire

Moses & Jane Hodgets
Catherine 05 AUG 1744 Halesowen, Worcestershire

I think the 30 NOV 1748 baptism given the Job connection is most likely but I've been unable to find any other siblings baptism entries for Job or marriage entry.

The earliest baptism entry for Job that I could find:
Job & Mary
Job Hodgets 18 NOV 1739 St Mary, Handsworth, Staffordshire

Interestingly I've found records of the Hodgetts from Handsworth area going back to the 16th Century. They also appear alot around Kingswinford, Halesowen areas also to the 16th Century. I'm wondering if my Hodgett family connects to these Hodgetts somehow??

I know it's a long post but I wanted to make sure no-one duplicated what I'd already found. I also thought if I include every bit of information I'd collected this may help.

Any help on tracing my Chant or Hodgett families further would be fantastic.

Kind regards
Adrian

Hi Farside,

A really good find and it's possible that Hawkins or Phillips was the maiden name of Jane who married Job Chant

The only problem is that I've found both John Hawkins & Mary Phillips baps' in St Matthews Church, Walsall but no matching sibling called Jane

Oh dear so many of my family connections are really proving a nightmare to trace

Many thanks for your effort.

Kind regards
Adrian
