The Value of Directories

Postby snoopysue » Thu Jun 17, 2010 5:22 pm

A revolation!

I had not really considered using trade directories when searching for information. However when trying to find the name of the pub one of my ancestors ran, I started looking at them a bit more closely.
I looked up one relative who ran an outdoor beer house, and right next to his name was his mother running a newsagents! I knew her address, but I didn't know what she did for a living. Looking through later directories I found her spinster daughter took over the business. Now that rang a bell :!:
My mother had told of an great aunt who ran a shop, but she couldn't remember which one. Now I know.
I'm no closer to the name of that pub though :(

I have always found trade directories very very usefull.

Sometimes if only to confirm that somebody is still breathing and not pushing up daisies.

I know the frustration when trying to find the name of a Pub in the UK. All they list is "Seller of beer" or similar.

In Australia they have central records that list all the licenced establishments and owners.

TheGenealogist lets you search across dozens of Directories/Gazettes at once. Noneed to search each individually.

I've not tried The Genealogist, how does it compare to other sites? I use ancestry, and Find my past for the 1911 census.

Its the only one with the non-conformist and overseas BMDs.

Its Parish Record collection is quickly beceoming the best but Staffordshire and Shropshire are poorly represented at the moment.

Its Family Search is one of the best tools I have ever used. It allows you to search census using the given names and years of birth of the family. This helps when searhign for families with surnames thats are constantly being transcribed incorrectly.

What is these days!! :(
I've just been on the site to see what they've got to offer, it looks as though it's better than Ancestry.

Hi Sue, yes it is good, think I shall join again, bit of an indulgence as I have finished my tree, but you never know what the Parish Registers can yield. Linell.
