I ordered and received a marriage certificate from the British General Records Office (GRO) dated 1855 and in the "Residence at the time of marriage" fields for both the bride and groom was written "Fee . . . . ." Can anyone tell me what that means? Thank you in advance if you can lend assistance in this regard. Sincerely, Mike Learmonth

Sometimes the address is the same...doesn't mean they were living there, just be able to marry in that Parish.
Where was it? Are you able to upload the image so we can try and decipher?

Here is a scan of the Entry of Marriage document. The marriage took place in Parish Church of Ludlow, Salop.

On the 1851 Census Alfred is living with his parents and siblings at Old Gate Fee, Ludlow, Shrops.

If you go to this web site

https://wikishire.co.uk/wiki/Ludford,_Herefordshire

It explains about Holdgate Fee or Holdgate's Fee. So it looks as though on the marriage certificate they have just shortened the abode to Fee.

It also gives Old Gate Fee in Alfred's will of 1893.

Thank you very much - excellent guidance.

Can you direct me to where I can view Alfred's will and I am very interested if his wife, Mary Ann had a will when she passed in 1875 in Ludlow at only 36 years old?

Upper Fee in Ludlow is in the West Midlands region of England. The postcode is within the Ludlow North ward/electoral division, which is in the constituency of Ludlow.

The shortened version for the Will for Alfred can be found on Ancestry.

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1995

1893
PILSON Alfred of Old Gate Fee Ludlow Salop haulier died 26 October 1892 Probate London 30 January to Henry Pilson marine store dealer and John Pilson haulier Effects £150 7s. 5d.

I can't see a Will for Mary Ann. "Before 1870 any money made by a woman (either through a wage, from investment, by gift, or through inheritance) instantly became the property of her husband once she was married, with the exception of a dowry....." This explanation can be found if you look on the internet under Married Women's Property Act 1870.
