Naval ratings questions

Postby garrypaulbrooks » Thu Jul 09, 2020 8:45 am

Hi

I've been examining my grandfathers' WW1 naval records and am not sure what the abbreviations under "Rating" mean

My paternal grandfather's rating column reads the same for all ships he served on -either "AMI(c)" or "AMI(o)", I'm not quite sure which, the handwriting isn't great.

My maternal grandfather's rating column reads "Sto(II)" for the first 2 ships then "Sto(i)" for the last one - stoker maybe?

Could anyone help?

Thanks!

I think that if it is AM1 then he was an Air Mechanic handling airplanes in the RNAS. I think the o stands for ordinary and the c for 1st class.
STO is probably stoker and the suffix letters are 1st & 2nd class.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

Thanks for this. My maternal grandfather being a Stoker wasn't a surprise, but my paternal grandfather's being an Air Mechanic in the Naval Air Service was. I suspect it would have been a surprise to my late father as well.
