Re-registered birth records

Postby TonyTomlin44 » Sun Jul 28, 2019 7:16 am

I'm not sure how to present questions on this forum so please tell me if there's a better way to do it.

I've come across a re-registration on some previous research so I understand a little (but not much) about re-registration on adoption.

I'm currently looking at the records of a family where there is a re-registration of a birth but one that has a bit of a twist.

Maybe someone can confirm that an adoption in these circumstances is the norm.

Mr Smith is married to Mrs Smith.

During the period of this marriage Mr Smith fathers a child with Miss Jones.

The child is registered as Child Smith with Miss Jones as mother.

Mrs Smith dies 5 years after Child Smith was born.

Mr Smith then marries Miss Jones.

Child Smith's birth is then re registered again showing Miss Jones as mother.

So, my question is, was that re registration likely to be the result of an adoption of Child Smith by his natural mother (is that necessary?) or was it just more likely as a way to give Child Smith a Birth Certificate in place of his original illegitimate birth record?

Thanks. Tony

Hi. On the form linked here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... al-parents it says that re-registration is to show that the child is a child of the marriage and has been legitimated by the marriage, so I should think that is why it is done.
