Ordering a birth certficate registered in Quinton

Postby expat66 » Fri Nov 04, 2011 11:48 pm

I have narrowed down a list of possible birth certfifcates for William Taylor born abt 1878 Quinton ... I have about 9 possibles.
These are all registered under Stourbridge and I have a list of the Vol and page numbers from Free BMD

I understand that I can order a certficate from a local office and request that only those with father as 'Joseph' be ordered.

.... but where do I send my request too? .... ideally needs to be email really as I am in Canada

I have only ordered certficates from GRO site before, so don't know how to go about this?

Just need pointing in the right direction here
thankyou

Probably Ridgacre before 1894 - see the table here :

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/dist ... ridge.html

Looks like it could be Worcestershire - let me know the details here and I'll ring them on Monday, just to be sure.

If Stourbridge it will prob be the Dudley office

http://www.dudley.gov.uk/community-and- ... tificates/

you can email them to ask if it is the correct one
then you can ask them how to pay if abroad too

http://www.dudley.gov.uk/community-and- ... lications/

which ones have you narrowed down cos if they are on here

http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk/cgi/b ... ds#surname

it will give you the regis office if at Dudley /Stourbridge which is same one .............and Sandwell

Have been doing alot of thinking over this one  .. actually brain's getting a bit sore
Looking at that school register for Quinton again.... if the William Taylor they have on there is my William Taylor then his birthdate is listed as 8 Feb 1878

I came up with my list of births from the free BMD on 'Ancestry' , which gave me Vol & page numbers for each entry under a particular district, County and quarter of registration.
If I limit the births to 1878 there are 3 likely ones ... if I broaden my search there are others registered in 1877 & 1879, but I guess I have to start somewhere

When I do a search on that link NL provided for West Midlands BMD it also comes up with 3 William Taylors born in 1878 in Stourbridge sub district. ( I am assuming that they are the same as the 3 that I get through 'Ancestry'?)

TAYLOR William T Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/071/403
TAYLOR William Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/072/166
TAYLOR William Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/072/20

So, I suppose my next step is to contact Dudley and go from there
I will let you know how I get on
Thanks

Update on the certficate situation.
There seems to be a difficulty with births in Quinton :?
I contacted Dudley with the 'possibles' I had found and they said that the Dudley Reg. District doesn't cover Quinton. They suggested I contact Birmingham, which I did, but then Birmingham have told me to go back to Dudley as they don't have the Quinton births either.
I have sent another email to Dudley to clarify exactly what they have.

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place by looking under 'Stourbridge' ?

I am confused

Maybe I should try the 'parish records' route?
Does anyone have Parish records for Quinton?

I think the one you might want, if you are going down the road of the Quinton Schools information is the one registered in Stourbridge in June Qtr 1878. If his DOB was 8 Feb 1878 - he would have been registered in March Qtr or June Qtr - I can't see one in March Qtr, but there is one in June Qtr - 6c 197. I don't think Quinton existed in 1878 as a Registration District - it would have been Stourbridge. Marriages which took place at Christ Church, Quinton were registered in Stourbridge at this time, and according to FreeBMD - these registers are now held at Dudley - ask Dudley Register Office to have a look who is the father on this one. They're really helpful there. Or, you could apply to the GRO direct, quoting the registration number.

Good Luck - Maggie

Thanks AntieEm,
Maybe I should just go ahead and order a likely certficate from GRO?

I have had another email from Dudley stating that they are not aware of any Quinton births in their registers and that none of the three possible births from BMD matched any of the 'clues' I was looking for
ie...
-- working back from the 1901 and 1911 census would put his date of birth in 1878.. and his place of birth as Quinton.
-- he names his father as Joseph Taylor ( a labourer) on his marriage certificate
-- and he may be the William Taylor I found on the register for Quinton Church School, whose birthdate was listed as ...8 Feb 1878....parent/guardian Elizabeth Taylor nailer.. residence Quinton.

They did suggest that because of the shifting boundaries some records have ended up in different offices.

If I do a search on West Midlands BMD for 1878 I get the following...

West Midlands Birth indexes for the years: 1878
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference
TAYLOR William G Walsall Walsall Register Office WAL/096/68
TAYLOR William H Dudley Dudley Register Office DUD/153/494
TAYLOR William T Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/071/403
TAYLOR William Bloxwich Walsall Register Office BLX/029/083
TAYLOR William Oldbury Sandwell Register Office OLD/58/156
TAYLOR William Oldbury Sandwell Register Office OLD/59/341
TAYLOR William Oldbury Sandwell Register Office OLD/59/466
TAYLOR William Rowley Regis Sandwell Register Office RR/70/67
TAYLOR William Sedgley Dudley Register Office SEG/125/372
TAYLOR William Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/072/166
TAYLOR William Stourbridge Dudley Register Office STO/072/20
TAYLOR William Wednesbury Sandwell Register Office WED/68/373
TYLER William Sedgley Dudley Register Office SEG/125/392

I don't know if any of the other offices are likely candidates for being where the birth certificate would be?

Not sure what to do next with this :?

This page at Genuki gives the areas covered by Stourbridge and relevant dates and notes regarding the district.

I only read over this very quickly, so may have missed a vital point.

It strikes me that if you think the Quinton school record has a good chance of being the correct person then your best bet would be to if GRO can provide the birth certificate of William Taylor born on that date with father Joseph.

Quinton seems to have a varied history as regards registration and was in Stourbridge for a wile:

1895-1909 Quinton was in Stourbridge registration district
1909-1912 Quinton was in Kings Norton registration district. It was transferred then to Birmingham so I suppose the registers will be held there now.

So confusing!
This link lists the Birmingham Register Office holdings:
http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/cs/Satelli ... %2FWrapper

It is very unclear. It seems to say that Quinton (other than some martiages) are held at Dudley - but didn't Dudley deny it? Is there a black hole of registrations?

Gardener,
Thankyou for that suggestion
I didn't know you could do that?..... I thought you had to provide volume/page number etc?
I will have a look at their website

Another update on where I am at with all this....
Dudley emailed me back today ....
They think they have solved the mystery of where early entries for Quinton are held, but still have not been able to find a birth matching the details given so far.
They have no births for a William TAYLOR on the 8th February of any year, or in 1878.

Entries for Ridgacre (Quinton) appear to be held in their HALESOWEN registers and not their STOURBRIDGE registers where they have been previously looking.
They think in 1909 Quinton was transferred to the Kings Norton district, which are held by Birmingham Register Office.

They asked me to provide names of other children which were born in the area and an estimate year and they will have a brief look for those and see if they can see that they hold any of those, or if in fact their births are held or recorded elsewhere.

I have emailed them back today with a list of children ( taken from that Quinton school register) with the possible refs. from West Midlands BMD and , in most cases ,these do seem to be listed under Halesowen.
So lets see what they find today.

I also had another email from Birmingham suggesting that if I want to try an adjoining district my best bet is probably Sandwell ... so I will give that a go too.

Phew
