If you have an important date that should be included to help other researchers, post below, and I will add it to this main post.

TIMELINE LIST OF IMPORTANT DATES

1538 - Parish registers started.

1695 - Tax imposed on parish register entries dissuading the poor from having births and marriages recorded.

1706 - Tax on parish register entries abolished.

1752 - Beginning of Church year changed from 25 March to 1 January.

1784 - Stamp Duty Act imposed a tax of three pence on parish register entries which again dissuaded the poor from having births and marriages recorded.

1794 - Stamp Duty Act parish register tax abolished.

1754 -1837 the only places to legally marry were in a parish (C of E) church, a Jewish synagoge or a Quaker Meeting House.
That was the only period when Non-Conformist marriages (also RC)
ones were not legal.
That did not stop them taking place, but if the couple were
worried about the legitimacy of any children then they also married in the
parish church.
After 1837 it became legal for people to be married in any licensed
premises, and while this covered most C of E churches it also included
NC and RC churches or chapels.
The only difference being that sometimes these churches or chapels did not have the wish (numbers of marriages) to have their own "Authorised person" (that meant a person -minister or priest - who was authorised to register the marriage) or Register. In that case the local Registrar would attend the marriage, which was conducted by the minister of the chapel, BUT *registered" by the Registrar, and therefore appears in the same register as that used for civil marriages in the Register Office itself. The
certificate will be signed by both the person who conducted the marriage,
and the Registrar who was present to legalise it.

1837 - 1 July - Civil registration started.

1841 - 6 June - Census night.

1851- 30 March - Census night.

1851 Religious Census taken....(following info from MarkCDodd)
"Note that on the 30 March 1851 a Religious Census was also taken.
It is available at Kew on Microfilm under Class HO 129 and many historical societies have portions relevant to them.
If you look at emigration from the U.K there is a huge spike in non-conformists leaving in late 1851 and 1852.
If you think your relatives might have left the U.K for religious reasons, the answers and level of co-operation their non-conformist
Parish showed in the 1851 census is a good clue.
It is also interesting to note that there were three distinct sets of questions asked as The Quakers might be willing to answer some things the
Wesleyans wouldn't and vice verci."

1861 - 7 April - Census night.

1866 - June quarter - Age at death included on GRO index.

1871 - 2 April - Census night.

1881 - 3 April - Census night.

1891 - 5 April - Census night.

1901- 31 March - Census night.

1911 - Sept Qtr- Mother’s maiden name included on GRO birth index.

1912 - March Qtr - Spouses surname included on GRO marriage index.

1921 Census night (to be released in 2022)

1931 Census Night (destroyed by fire in 1942, not war related)

1941 No Census night (due to war)

1951 Census night (to be released in 2052)

1969 - Date of birth included on GRO death index
