Hi,

I've got an ancestor who ran a temperance hotel in Chemlsford Essex in late 1800s. Just wondered if anyone knew anything about this occupation, was it common, were temperance hotel owners liked/disliked in the community, etc?

Thanks!

There were a few temperance hotels in Birmingham until quite recently when thesy were taken over by another hotel chain. They were temperance hotels because they didn't serve alcohol - perhaps it originally had something to do with Cadbury's. I don't think they were disliked, in fact when I worked in Birmingham we used to hold functions there and they were very nice - just didn't serve alcohol.
