Does anyone know what a 'Captain's Clerk, American Army' did? The man in question wasn't even American - He came from Scotland!

Thanks for your reply. He was actually a Captain's Clerk in the American Army, not the Navy but I suppose the job entailed the same kind of duties. I have since learned he emigrated to America with his family and served in the American Civil War!
