ARC TBC - Seadoe or Seador name in Scotland

Postby usignuolo » Thu Mar 17, 2011 11:53 pm

Some while back I started researching my family tree and gave up when it threw up a great grandmother, born in Scotland in 1823 called Mary Seadoe or Seador. At the time my research skills were rudimentary and as I could not trace this name I thought I must have tracked back to the wrong place. The name did not seem to resemble anything Scottish I could find.

Recently I started again and once more got led back to this same reference. The original entry is copperplate script and looks like Seadoe or Seador. The biggest problem I have is that Seador and its variations seem to be middle european not Scottish.

Does it ring any bells with anyone out there, as a phonetic rendering of some more common Scottish name? Sshould I look in the Non Conformist records? I do recall my father saying something about that side of the family being Scottish Presbyterians.

Who did she marry and the date of marriage?

Many European names appear in Scotland as it was good place to flee from persecution elsewhere.

My guess would be Seadon or Seaden.

A few Seadon appear in the non-confirmist registers in Suffolk and Norfolk and a spattering around Stone, Staffordshire.

A lot of them are Presyterian but there are a couple of Baptists and Protestant Dissenters.

There are Seddon around Lanarkshire in Scotland and Lancashire in England.

According to the 1881 census, Mary nee Seadoe, was born in 1823 and in 1881 was a widow, Mary Goss, of 58 living in Marylebone London. Also at home were a 32 year old daughter Maria Goss and 31 year old son Charles Goss and two other daughters. This 1881 census says she was born in Scotland.

I have looked at the census entry in the National Archives and her maiden surname is very hard to read. Looks like Seadoe or maybe Seador. There may of course have been older children who had left home already. I would estimate she married between 1840-5.

I cannot find the family in the 1861 or 1871 census. The 1881 census says Maria (Mary's daughter) was born in Great Yarmouth and son Charles in Kentish town. But I cannot find son Charles in earlier censuses.

On Family Search I found a Charles Goss with the right sort of birth date (1820) born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk who may be Mary's husband but I can find no earlier references to him and have no definite evidence of this. But then I cannot find any earlier census references to a Charles Goss born in Norfolk in 1820 or to a Mary Seadoe born in Scotland. But then she might in the Scottish archives? I think Charles Goss snr must have died between 1871 and 1881 as she is a widow by 1881.

As I said for all I know they may have been non conformists and may have married in Scotland and may be on the non conformist registers. All I have is the 1881 census. I am not sure where to go next.

Thanks for that - it certainly looks like the right marriage but I am still puzzled about the seadoe name as I can find no references to it anywhere else. is the underscore at the end significant - means problems reading it perhaps?

I have no idea where you are getting her maiden name from.

It is not listed on a census form.

Here they are in 1871 and you can see she is a Mary Ann and born in Ireland and married a Charles Goss.

I thought Charles was born in 1850 - not 1857 - which is what it says in the 1881 census. Also the 1881 census says the wife Mary was born in Scotland not Ireland.

It is impossible to read Charles' age on the Census but I would say 21 would be the closest giving a birth of 1860.

This looks like his baptism.
