ARC TBC - marriage look up in shropshire

Postby trev2010 » Fri Dec 17, 2010 1:10 pm

Looking for the marriage of john binns. He was born in halifax west yorkshire in approx. 1785.By 1805 he had joined the shropshire 53rd regiment of foot. They set sail for india in that year. His wife Mary went with him,and they had 3 children in India,Robert born 1808,Ellen born and died 1811, and john born 1812. I have been searching for their marriage but can find no record of it in Halifax or India. I am now wondering if he married in Shropshire ,maybe Shrewsbury. Would it be possible for someone to check parish records for me. Been looking for this info a long time.
Thanks

Just found some more info about John Binns. He probably joined the shropshire 53rd in Halifax in Jan 1804,while they were stationed there. From there they went to carlisle, where the military chapel was st Marys Church, another possible marriage venue. From there they went to canterbury then portsmouth. They set sail for india in April 1805.

No Peterd I havent any info like that. He was back in halifax by 1818,because his 4th child was born then. The regiment didnt return from india til 1825. Maybe he was wounded, and had to be sent back?

Thre is no pension record for him, which would suggest he did not complete his service for whatever reason.

However, if he signed up in 1805 and arrived back in 1817 then that suggests he did his 12 year stint.

How sure are you that he left for India in 1805?

I search through all of the Shropshire Parish records and there is not a single John Binns marriage.

Looks like the Binns surname is almost entirely in Yorkshire.

Seems quite a while between marriage and first birth.

Here is one I found....

Parish Records Collection - marriage

Day: 14
Month: Dec
Year: 1806
Groom Forenames: John
Groom Surname: BINNS
Groom's Parish: OTP
Groom's Abode: Hipperholm
Groom's Occupation: Weaver
Bride Forenames: Mary
Bride Surname: SHARP
Bride's Parish: OTP
Bride's Abode: Hipperholm
Bride's Condition:
By Licence: Banns
Place: Halifax
Description: St John
County: Yorkshire West Riding
Country: England
Register No: 469

Record source: Halifax St John Marriages

Cant be certain of anything really. But I know the regiment left for India in april 1805,so he must have gone then. You are right about the first birth though ,there is a big gap there.
