My great great grandmother Jane DOUGLAS (occasionally DOUGLASS) was born around 1858 according to most sources I have found. However, I have been unable to find a birth certificate or baptism record and I can’t find anything out about her parents other than from her wedding certificate where her father is William DOUGLAS, an engineer.
She married Robert HAYWOOD in Whitechapel 1876 and they are both age 18 on the certificate and both living in Newcastle Street.
In the 1891 census Jane HEYWOOD is shown as age 32 and Robert is 33 (or possibly 30) and Jane’s birthplace is given as Newington, London (i.e. Surrey).
She died later in 1891 and is age 33 on the death certificate.
On the 1881 census I have found Jane HAYWOOD age 29 a brush maker b. London married to Robert age 31 sugar refiner. All the details including their children fit apart from Jane and Robert’s ages.
There is a Jane Douglas on the 1871 census age 14 working in Newington as a servant which could be her. Place of birth is Surrey Lambeth.
I can’t find her on the 1861 census but there appear to be significant gaps in that census around the Southwark / Lambeth area where she may well have been living.
I have investigated Jane DOUGLAS and DOUGLASS born in Surrey around that date as shown on Free BMB by tracing them through censuses and I have ruled them all out mainly because the father is not William – though I haven’t proven this by ordering birth certificates.
I’ve been using Ancestry. Any ideas where I might go next to find out details of her birth or parents?
