That's interesting that Richard was a widower, I didn't know that. Thanks.
The names of the witnesses don't mean anything - as yet.

I've found a possible first wife for Richard, Sarah Unknown.
They had a daughter Ann christened in St Bartholemews in Wednesbury (same church as Richards other children) 1 Feb 1801. (on family search)
I can't find a marriage, or a death for Sarah.

I've also found possible parents for Richard:
Thomas Hopkins and Catharine, with a christening of Richard in 1779, which ties up with what I have, but as yet no definate proof. (again family search)

Any ideas where to look next?

That's got to be him - I've got a christening to one of his and Martha's children where he is Richard Tibbits Hopkins! It's only on the one record though - they were all christened in wednesbury (including Richard's and Sarah's daughter Ann in 1801 - that's where I got Sarah's name from).
Thanks Cid

I've found a christening for a Richard Hopkins 18 Nov 1779 at St Bartholemews, Wednesbury. Father Thomas Hopkins; mother Catherine. Ties up with 1841 and 1851 census as far as place of birth, both census returnes have him as being born in 1776.
But I have no way of knowing whether these are the correct parents.
