ARC TBC Joseph GREEN (b.1775) on BCC

Post by nugentsmith »

Ruth GREEN (b.1807) and Leah GREEN (b.1815) have been linked as sisters, with parents Joseph GREEN (b.1775) and Ann (or Nancy).
Ann provides the link as she is the Head of a household in Garrat’s Lane in 1851, shown on BCC as:
HO107/2028/?/27 Sch 96
Ann Green. Head. 75. Widow. Pauper/nailer.
William Green. son. 19. Nailer.
Elizabeth Green. Dau. 13. Nurse.
Ruth Smith. Dau. Widow. 44. Nailer.
Emma Smith. Daughter 16. Nailer.
Anne Smith. Dau. 3.
George Jepsher. 43. Lodger.

I have not found Ann on the 1861 Census, and think that she died in 1856:
GREEN, ANN Age 80 GRO Reference: 1856 J Quarter in DUDLEY Volume 06C Page 2
I have a certificate:
D/1856/Dudley/Rowley-Regis/No 147 - reg 10/4/1856
Death on 9th April 1856 at Garratt's Lane Rowley Regis, of Ann Green, Female, Age 80 years, Widow of Joseph Green Nail Maker. Cause: Natural Decay. Informant: (X the mark of) Sylvia Green, in attendance, Garratt's Lane Rowley Regis.

A search on the 1851 and 1861 Censuses shows that, apart from a Selva born in 1845, there is one other Sylvia/Selva Green in Rowley Regis – the wife of Joseph Green (b.1775), Sylvia EDGE.

Two other issues:
(1) Ruth Green married William SMITH on 9 November 1823 and a witness of the marriage was a Joseph GREEN. Was this Ruth’s father or someone else? When did father die?
(2) Leah Green married John SIVITER on 28 September 1843 and no father is given for Leah. Might this suggest that Leah’s mother Ann had been widowed before Leah’s birth in 1815?

What is the link between Joseph GREEN (b.1775) and Ruth? If this is the right Sylvia Green, it is very tempting to think that he might be Ruth’s brother. However, it would be useful to have some other points of contact between the families.

Sorry, typo in my post! Sylvia EDGE is married to Joseph GREEN (b.1792)! Or was this Joseph born in 1795 on basis of his age in Censuses?

I have connected up Joseph Green as brother to Ruth and Leah with a note.
we do need more proof but it makes it easier to work on it.
