Thanks for your help. I've been trying since 1994 and still can't find him!

I think if he is on the census's he must be under a different surname.

I have tried the surnames linked to him but nothing. Could he be in an orphanage or workhouse, would these be on the censuses? Others have him as connected with Ballards but this would mean his mother was Hannah and father Benjamin but I don't think this is correct as I had been told by a direct ancestor his mother was Mary.

I have Nicholls ancestors and they changed back & forth to Nock/Nicholls

What details have got on Benjamin Ballard and Hannah?

is it worth just searching the census for Knox or knock?
if he is born west bromwich where in west bromwich was it gadds lane couldn't read birth certif.
or maybe just put in John born 1853 gadds lane west bromwich.

It could be he is just not on the census's.

Info gathered after looking at other peoples family trees.
Benjamin Nock (B.1819, Sedgley) married Hannah Fletcher (B. 1824, Staffs) in Cosely Staffs 11th May 1845
John Nock born 8th Nov 1850, Wolverhampton
Benjamin Nock D. 1857, Dudley
Hannah Nock (nee. Fletcher, presumed) married Thomas Ballard, Dudley Dec 1857

On 1871 census John Nock is recorded as Thomas Ballard's stepson.

The reason I queried this as being the correct John Nock is that I had been told by a family member his mother was called Mary, father not known which is supported by the birth certificate I have.
On his wedding certificate my John's age is 20 which make his year of birth 1853 this links with my birth certificate and not with the John Nock/Ballard B 1850 who was born in Wolverhampton not West Bromwich as I'd been informed and is consistently stated on the censuses post his marriage.
