Fathers name

Postby Katykat » Fri Mar 22, 2019 1:43 pm

Hello, I have a marriage notice between John Parker and Sarah Davies on 14th August 1859 at Michaelstone Super Avon, Neath, Wales. Is anyone able to find out Sarah’s fathers name? She was born in Llanfynach in 1836 ish. Also, if not asking too much, Johns fathers name, born Neath 1837. I have a feeling it may also be John Parker but not sure.

Oh, Thank you so much BC. I have actually got Benjamin Davies down but had no proof that Benjamin’s daughter Sarah was my Sarah. I don’t suppose you know who Benjamin’s wife was? I have her as Ester ? Williams but for the life of me don’t know where I’ve come up with Williams. I think she may have been born in 1810. Brilliant info about John Parker’s parents too. They would have been my great great great grandparents.

1841 Census: Ynis, Llanelly, Carmarthenshire
Benjamin Davies, 30, Labourer
Ester Davies, 30 - Born in County
Rachel Davies, 7
Sarah Davies, 5
Hannah Davies, 2
(Others not born in County)

1851 Census: Tewcoed Row, Michaelstone Super Avon, Neath, Glamorgan
Benjamin Davies, Head.Mar, 44, Horsler, Pembrokeshire (can't read the town)
Ester Davies, Wife, 41, Llanwinio, Carmarthenshire
James Davies, Son.UM, 19, Collier
Rachel Davies, Dau.UM,17, Tin Plate Cleaner
Sarah Davies, Dau, 15, Tin Plate Cleaner
Hannah Davies, Dau, 12, Penrith, Pembrokeshire (should this be Penarth?)
(Others born Llanfyrnach, Pembroke)

1861 Census: 16 London Row, Michaelston Super Avon, Neath, Glamorgan
Benjamin Davies, Head.Mar, 53, Ostler, Clyde, Pembroke (should this be Clydey?)
Esther Davies, Wife, 50, Llanwinio, Carmarthenshire
Hannah Davies, Dau.UM, 22, Tin Plate Cleaner, Penrhiw, Pembroke (should this be Penrydd?)

This birth is on the GRO web site https://www.gro.gov.uk but there are other Hannah Davies with different Mother's Maiden names

DAVIES, HANNAH - Mother's Maiden Name: WILLIAMS
GRO Reference: 1838 D Quarter in HAVERFORDWEST Volume 26 Page 534

As some of the children were born in Llanfyrnach is this the marriage of Benjamin & Esther

Marriage: 20 October 1831 Parish of Llanfyrnach, Pembroke
Benjamin DAVID, Bachelor of this Parish
Esther William, Spinster of this Parish
Married with Consent of Parents
Wit: David DAVID, Phillip Nicholas
Groom signs, Bride makes her mark X

Banns also give groom as Benjamin DAVID.

See what you think.

Thank you BC. Lots of information for me to get my teeth into. I wish I could remember where I got the name Williams from. Or perhaps I just deduced it because I couldn’t find any other Benjamin Davies and Ester. I will have a tootle around but in the meantime I will Close this post. Thanks once again.

Postscript. That Hannah in the 1861 census I think was born in Penrhiw which is a derirative of Penrhiwceiber. It’s 2 miles from Llanfyrnach, so it makes sense. Also, Penrith is the modern name for Penrydd. Both of these could be the same as I’m sure that lots of information was lost in translation in those days. That part of Wales was purely Welsh speaking then ( still predominantly is) That being so, I don’t think the Hannah born in Haverfordwest is the same.
I will go with the marriage as the population of Llanfyrnach in 1831 was less than 900 so the chances of more than one pair of the same names marrying in the same year would be remote.

As you are familiar with the areas of Wales, you could look on the GRO Birth Indexes link which I gave (it doesn't cost anything, but you do have to register) to see if you can find Hannah's birth.

My mother-in-law is Welsh, but thank goodness another family member is doing that research :P

I will archive this thread, but if you need it to be re-opened just let me know.
