ARC TBC Brick wall for birth certificate Yorkshire

Postby Marty67 » Tue Jan 30, 2018 11:01 pm

Hello,

I have been trying to locate my grandfather's birth certificate and have come to a big brick wall!! I have his marriage certificate and death certificate from Australia. Both of these list his birth as Hull, Yorkshire.
However, when I have tried to locate his birth details from England I have had no luck. I have searched Ancestry, GRO, Archives, and YorkshireBMD extensively with no result.
In response to SRD (thankyou) the details are:

John Kerslake Atkinson

Death Certificate (Australian) death: Brisbane Australia 1945 aged 56, birth would be 1889, resident in Australia for 44 years, approximately 12 years old when came to Australia. Lists he was born in Hull, Yorkshire.
Parents are listed as Alma Kerslake and John Atkinson (Marine engineer).
Marriage Certificate (Australian) lists same information as above. Married Rosina Jane Skinner (born in Australia).
He was in the Australian Army 1940-1943 - his Army records state he was born in Hull.
I do not know if he had any siblings.
He appears on the Australian Electoral Rolls in 1925 as John Kerslake Atkinson.
Family stories indicate that Kerslake definitely was his middle name as it was his mother's maiden name and he was given this name.
He had a daughter named Alma and my father's middle name is also Kerslake, so I do believe these are real names.
I have no information on where he lived in Australia before 1925.

If anyone has any advice that could help, please share.

Thankyou,

Marty.

We'll need a bit more info, his age, any idea when he travelled to Oz, any relatives, any other possible links etc.
Currently investigating the Hillmans of Sussex.

What was his occupation? There is no record showing of a marriage Kerslake to Atkinson. The GRO shows no birth with mother as Kerslake, although that doen´t show all...

There are quite a few Trees on Ancestry. Some with age way out! :o 1877
Others have 1895, a birth of 3rd October 1895. There is also a photo of a gravestone, that says he was 50 at death.
Also father as Joseph???

Thankyou for the replies.

Yes the 1877 date with Joseph Atkinson is an error which has been confirmed as such by the person who did the original research. There is a connection with my Atkinsons to that family, but it comes much later through marriage. Unfortunately, that information has been spread all over various sites.
The 1895 date could be correct, that comes from his army application where my grandfather wrote he was born in 1895. I imagine he did this to lower his age for acceptance in the army in 1940. The headstone is of my grandfather.

The morgue information I have seen, very interesting, I am looking into that...but that has become another brick wall!!!

It will be interesting to see what it says. I was thinking that John may be registered under Kerslake and not Atkinson. I cant see that either! Strange...

Is this still a Brickwall, or have you solved it?
