ARC TBC John Hadley

Postby SRD » Tue Aug 29, 2017 1:53 pm

Looking on BCC at the children of Eli Hadley & Maria Hall I think I might have found census info regarding their son John:
Census 1871
John Hadley Head Mar 23 Bricksetter Old Hill
? Hadley Wife Mar 23 Old Hill
Emma Jan ? ? 15 Assisting at home Lancashire Barrow
Eliza Hall Serv 12 1859 Serv ?
Thos Woodward Lodger Unm 20 Bricksetter Halesowen
Eli Hader Lodger Mar 24Pattern Maker Old Hill
Gllen Hader Lodger Mar 25 Labourer Nither Moore
Harriet M Lee ? 4 Scholar Lancashire Barrow
A R Lee Son 9 Months Infant Lancashire Barrow
Page 34
Civil Parish: Dalton
Municipal Borough: Barrow
Town: Barrow
Ecclesiastical District: St James
Schedule No: 140
Address 19 Hood St.
Superintendent Registrar's District: Ulverston
Registrar's Sub-District: Dalton
ED: 23
RG10/4245
Folio: 20 - inferred from other records

Note: I think this is the one that ties John into Eli & Maria's family. I think, although the handwriting is pretty awful, that the Eli & Gllen Hader are in fact John's brother Eli & his wife Ellen. If we add to that their elder brother Adin having spent time in Ulverston, witness the birthplace given of his daughters on census records, there seems to be a strong link between this part of Lancashire and Eli & Maria's children.

Note: The children are all crossed off so presumably weren't resident on the day. Was the form incorrectly filled in?

What I can't find are John's birth details, or his marriage to Ann although there are possibilities:

Marriages Dec 1868 (>99%)
Hadley John Ulverstone 8e 1010
WESTARD Ann Ulverston 8e 1010

I can't find any other info about Ann Westard

possible
Marriages Dec 1870 (>99%)
Hadley John W. Bromwich 6b 1046

I can't find the matching partner to this record.

possible
Marriages Sep 1871 (>99%)
Hadley John Dudley 6c 92
TAYLOR Ann Dudley 6c 92
[/i]
If this is correct then the 1871 census showing them as married is wrong and they must have returned from Lancashire to get married.

Can anyone show firstly, that I'm wrong in thinking that these census records refer to Eli & Maria's son John, and secondly find the birth & marriage records that tie all this in together.

Thanks.

The children have mothers maiden name as Westood. I presume it could have been wrongly spelt as Westard/Westward??

Local BMD

Alternative Entries in the Marriage Indexes.

As these indexes are based on the original data held by the local register offices, the database will often contain extra entries with the same reference number. The reasons for an extra entry can be one of the following:
Remarriage. Where the lady is remarrying and both her maiden name and former married name are on the entry in the register, then both are listed in the indexes. It is not possible to tell from the indexes which is the maiden name.
Change of name. Some entries in the register show alternative names for both firstnames and surnames. All will be listed in the indexes.
Poor writing. Where the original handwriting in the register is unclear all possible interpretations are listed in the indexes.
Parent's surname differs from child's. For example, if a child is raised by the mother without the father being present, he or she may have taken the mother's surname, so when the parent's surname differs on the entry in the register, both surnames may be used in the index.
Difference between the name as entered by the registrar and the name as signed.
Alias names (also known as / formerly known as).
Hyphenated surnames may be listed as both names and/or each name separately.

The list below will show both husband/wife and wife/husband combinations for all the entries that match your chosen reference number.
When you click on the reference number this will display a partially completed application form for you to print off.

Thanks, from that and a bit more research I think she was actually a Westwood, possibly related to the Joseph Westwood who married John's eldest sister Hannah but I can't find any proofs.

The "Lee" children should be "ditto"

HADLEY, HARRIET MARIA TILLEY
GRO Reference: 1867 J Quarter in ULVERSTONE Volume 08E Page 724

HADLEY, ALBERT ROBERT TILLEY
GRO Reference: 1870 S Quarter in ULVERSTON Volume 08E Page 698

And this is John's daughter who is in the 1881/91 census

HADLEY, LUCILLA WESTWOOD
GRO Reference: 1873 S Quarter in ULVERSTON Volume 08E Page 718

So I think this is Emma Jane (also "ditto" in the 1871 census)

ADLEY, EMMA JANE WESTWOOD
GRO Reference: 1869 D Quarter in ULVERSTONE Volume 08E Page 691

She should have been 15 months I suppose, but not sure what she would have been assisting with!

You would need a certificate or baptism to confirm it, but I think it all hangs together well enough to de-brickwall it :-)
