ARC TBC Thomas & Caroline Hickman on BCC

Postby sp1 » Mon May 22, 2017 12:25 pm

This Thomas & Caroline:
http://www.bcconnections.tribalpages.co ... ver=404385

This couple have bugged me for years (too many Hickmans and too little time!) - different ages given in censuses and their marriage doesn't seem to exist!

I now think that they were both born around 1826 in Gornal (possibly one or both of them in Ruiton, and I think I have finally found their marriage.....

More to follow.

I strongly suspect this is their marriage:

Freereg:
9 Aug 1853, All Saints, Sedgley
Thomas Hickman, 24, bachelor, labourer, Gornal, father John Hickman, labourer
& Catharine Blackham, 24, spinster, Gornal, father John Blackham, Stonemason
Witnesses: Joseph Timmins, Julia Timmins
All sign X

I think Catharine is a mistake in the register and that this is actually Caroline Blackham on BCC here:
http://www.bcconnections.tribalpages.co ... ver=404358

The age, place and fathers name and occupation all fit, and I can't find a 'Catharine' anywhere, nor does there seem to be a marriage for Caroline Blackham.

Of course, this doesn't account for the son Thomas Hickman born about 1851. He could have been born before they married and possibly given the name originally of either Hickman or Blackham?? - can't find a baptism!

Of course, Thomas could have been previously married, despite saying he was a bachelor in 1853, and there is a Thomas b1851 in the 1851 census with parents Thomas and Ruth. Guess what - can't find their marriage either!
Another possibility is that the Thomas, son of Thomas & Caroline, was simply born after the date of the 1851 census....

Caroline Blackham and her siblings baptisms are also on Freereg ( as well as on BCC) but it's interesting to look at the fathers details:

Caroline, 1826, father is a labourer, Penn Wood
William, 1829, father is a mason, Upper Gornal
Thomas, 1822 and Sarah, 1824, father is a bricklayer, Upper Gornal

All of the marriages for the children of John Blackham give his occupation as Stonemason, but I don't think it's a big leap from labourer to bricklayer to mason/ Stonemason (assuming he was just laying stones and not carving or cutting them?)

I'm going to order a birth certificate for one of the children (which I should have done years ago!) to confirm mothers maiden name, but can anyone find anything I've missed: Thomas Hickman b1851, Thomas Hickman born about 1826 with father John (baptism or census).....or anything else.......?

Thanks RF - didn't know they did that!

Took me ages to get access to the site, but after doing so none of the children here seem to have been registered!?

Wonder why they didn't show up when I tried?

Not sure this is Thomas- I think he's 3-4 years older, and there are at least 3 or 4 candidates?
