ARC TBC WEBB Family Oldbury-

Postby Rob G » Tue Apr 18, 2017 9:11 am

I have traced the origins of the WEBB family to Wotton under Edge Gloucestershire early 1700s, this wasn't easy since WEBB is extremely common in that area! Part of the family migrated to the Black Country mid 19th century -

Thomas Osborne WEBB b. 1830 Wotton u Edge d. 1916 Oldbury.
1851 has him aged 21, single, engineering assistant in clothing factory Wotton u Edge
m. 1.- 1853 to Mary PONTING at St Bartholomew's church Edgbaston - no children
m. 2.- 1856 to Mary Ann MARTIN at St Martin's in the Bull Ring Birmingham - 9 children as below
Emmanuel 1858-1934
William 1861
George 1862
Thomas 1864-1924
Hannah 1867
Emma 1869
John 1871-1939
Anthony 1874-1960
Osborne 1876-1964
The family lived at various locations in Oldbury (Langley) prior to settling at Whyley Street.

Thomas Osborne WEBB has proved a difficult character to trace, as sometimes he is recorded as just Thomas, other times just Osborne and then both forenames together! Also, there may be a connection to the WEBB family of undertakers based in West Bromwich, but I have yet to confirm this. I would be interested to learn if anyone has an interest or knowledge of the above family.

I can't see any connection as yet with Webb's the undertakers from West Bromwich but i do see names of relations who are familiar to me.Harbach for example is not a common name and i have a mate with surname Harbach who originated from Tat Bank,Oldbury where the Webb's lived in 1861 and around the corner in 1871 and 1881.Vicorage Street and Moat Lane.

I've got a feeling Mary Ann Webb b.1885 is the daughter of George Webb .1862.

Thanks for your input Rob, interesting!

George WEBB b. 1862 m. Mary A WALKER b. 1863 at Christ Church Oldbury 1886
I have only traced one child from this marriage, Bertha WEBB b. 1893 in Oldbury

However, the above George WEBB married a second time to Mary LOWE West Bromwich Reg Office in 1902
once again, only traced one child from this marriage - George Samuel WEBB b. 1904.

Thomas Osborne Webb and Mary Martin seem a bit old to be the parents of Mary Ann Webb b.1885. I will include her on BCC as the daughter of Thomas and Mary but i think she's a granddaughter. Northern Lass can we put this on Black Country Genealogy Discussion please? Maybe someone can find a marriage or a birth for Mary Ann Webb b.1885.

Rob,

George WEBB is the son of Thos Osborne WEBB & Mary MARTIN, so If Mary Ann WEBB is George's daughter, then you are correct!

I am a direct descendant of the WEBB line, would be interested in your connection to the family.

Mary Ann Webb 's marriage if possible. Something to show who her father was. It's not Thomas Osborne Webb. I mean he's probably old enough to have been the father but his wife is surely past child bearing age. ( thats not meant to be anti feminist)

Rob

I agree that it is doubtful that Thomas Osborne WEBB was the father of Mary Ann. The 1891 (listed only as Osborne) census states that he is, but surely that must be a mistake?

1891 census
Osborne Webb, head, married, 61, Sawyer, b. Glos Wotton u Edge
Mary Ann, wife, married, 59, b. Staffs Bilston
Anthony, son, single, 17, Sawyer's labourer, b. Worcs Oldbury
Osborne, son, single, 15, Sawyer's labourer, b. Worcs Oldbury
Mary Ann, daur, single, 6, Scholar, b. Worcs Oldbury
Residing Birchfield Lane, Langley, Oldbury.

As we know, sometimes information stated on census forms was not always correct and thus, Mary Ann aged 6, is unlikely to be the daughter of Osborne and Mary Ann aged 61 & 59 respectively.

Living next door at 106 Birchfield Lane is another Thomas WEBB aged 45, b. Halesowen. Thomas Osborne did have a son Thomas, but according to my records, the ages don't match by a good margin. However, could this neighbour be another relative and perhaps the elusive Mary Ann aged 6, was a visitor next door?

Speculation I know, all of which doesn't answer your query!
